Daily Devotional: Receiving Correction

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

Life Sayings:

  • It’s not about perfection but direction—fail forward.

  • When I finally get over me, I can see God and others.

"How long will you simple ones love your simple ways?

How long will mockers delight in mockery

and fools hate knowledge?

If you had responded to my rebuke,

I would have poured out my heart to you

and made my thoughts known to you."

—Proverbs 1:22–23

Failure is inevitable. The real question is, will I fail forward?

God doesn’t rebuke us to shame us. He corrects because He loves us. But how we respond to correction reveals everything about the condition of our heart. Proverbs 1 paints a sobering picture: those who reject correction are not just rejecting advice—they're rejecting God Himself.

Our culture despises correction. We’ve taught ourselves to associate it with judgment, with shaming, with ego. But in God’s kingdom, correction is love. It’s instruction. It’s coaching. In fact, many people in the sports world have a better understanding of correction than the church. Athletes expect to be coached—even yelled at—because they want to win. And they know correction is the only path to growth.

God is the ultimate coach. He doesn’t waste correction. He delivers it through Scripture, through life events, and through the counsel of others. But if we refuse to listen, He eventually allows consequences to teach us what we wouldn’t receive through words.

Proverbs even tells us that God “laughs” when calamity overtakes the fool—not because He delights in suffering, but because the outcome is tragically predictable. The fool wanted blessing without change. He wanted grace without truth. But that’s not how life works. Actions have outcomes. Sowing leads to reaping. Even when grace is offered, we must be willing to change.

David sinned greatly—but when he was confronted, he repented and changed. That’s why he was called a man after God’s own heart. He received correction and allowed it to reshape his direction. The fool, on the other hand, resists instruction, then demands rescue when things fall apart. But God says clearly: “I called, and you refused. So when calamity strikes, I will not answer” (see Proverbs 1:24–28).

Here’s the truth: the most coachable people are the ones who grow the most. They’re not perfect. They’re responsive. They listen, reflect, and adjust. And because they do, God pours out His wisdom. He makes His thoughts known. He transforms their lives from the inside out.

Reflection Question

When was the last time I received correction without defensiveness? What did that moment reveal about the posture of my heart?

Prayer

Lord, teach me to welcome correction. Help me stop seeing it as condemnation and begin seeing it as a gift from You. I don’t want to resist You by resisting the voices You’ve placed in my life. Soften my heart. Make me coachable. And help me grow in wisdom, for my sake and for those around me. Amen.

Today’s Step of Obedience

Identify someone you trust to speak truth into your life. Ask them directly: “Is there anything you see in me that needs to change?” Then listen. Take it to God. And respond with humility..
