Daily Devotional: Seek God, Not Miracles

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33, NKJV)

Miracles are real. Deliverance is real. The supernatural is part of the normal Christian life. Yet there is a warning that protects the heart: seek God, not miracles. When a person becomes too focused on a miracle, the conditions are often not present in the heart for the miracle to happen. Fixation can become self-centered. It can become a form of demanding. It can become a subtle accusation: “God, You must prove Yourself to me.”

That posture is a recipe for spiritual heartbreak. If my commitment to God becomes contingent on one outcome, then my faith is not truly rooted in God’s character. It is rooted in my preferred timeline. When that timeline is not met, bitterness grows. Disillusionment grows. Many people stop before the work is complete, and then they conclude God does not answer.

The stronger path is to pursue heart change. When heart change is happening, spiritual authority is growing. Humility grows. Obedience grows. Prayer grows. The temple becomes more surrendered. God does not go where I do not go, and as I go with Him, I make more room for His presence.

In that environment, miracles can happen as part of the walk. Sometimes they come instantly. Sometimes they come after a season. Either way, the heart is protected because the main pursuit is God Himself. A person who seeks God regardless of the outcome is growing in the very authority that often makes deliverance possible.

This also keeps motives clean. When the goal is God’s glory and God’s will, the heart is aligned. When the goal is self, the heart is divided. God responds to hearts, not only to words. He is not impressed by religious activity. He is looking for partnership, faith, obedience, and humility.

So today I choose a steady pursuit. I will ask for deliverance. I will pray with faith. I will also keep seeking God even if the answer is delayed. I will keep obeying what I know to obey. I will keep taking the next step of surrender. That is how the bar of spiritual authority rises. That is how conditions for breakthrough are established.

Miracles happen. The better life is to make the miracle secondary and the relationship primary. God is the reward, and miracles are often part of the path.

Reflection Question

Is my pursuit primarily God Himself, or am I pursuing God mainly as a pathway to what I want?

Prayer

Father, keep my heart steady. Help me seek You more than outcomes. Purify my motives and strengthen my obedience. Let deliverance come in Your timing, and let my faith be rooted in Your character, not in a single result. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Write a short surrender statement: “Lord, I will walk with You regardless of this outcome.” Read it aloud today. Then practice one act of seeking God that has nothing to do with the request you are praying about (worship, gratitude, serving someone, or Scripture meditation).
