Daily Devotional: Shared Outcomes

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

Life Sayings:

  • God has made us one—I am my brother’s keeper.

  • As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

“If one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it.” - 1 Corinthians 12:26, NKJV

I do not have to work at being one with others. Oneness is already a reality God built into creation. Everything every person does has some level of impact on the rest of creation. My results are never just mine.

From the beginning, God created us for relationship and shared outcomes. God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in relationship. They share in all things. When God made us in His image, He created us for connection with Him and with each other. Male and female need each other. Neither is complete in and of itself. God also placed mankind in charge of the earth, which means the earth is a shared possession and creation is impacted by human responses. Life is not isolated. Life is connected.

This sharing goes deeper than we often realize. God designed life so that we pass our nature on to the next generation. Adam’s sin did not stay with Adam. It moved through humanity. The reach of shared outcomes can extend through hundreds, even thousands of years. Oneness is real, whether I acknowledge it or not.

There are also different degrees of oneness. Scripture teaches that believers are one. Scripture also teaches that husband and wife are one. Every time I make a covenant or a serious promise, a level of oneness is formed. Every time I break a promise, the damage is not merely personal. The oneness is harmed, which brings real consequences.

This is why abandonment wounds so deeply. When a father or mother walks away, there is a sense of violation because oneness is a fact. Pain can exist even when a child has never known the parent. People who choose independence or isolation often believe they are only choosing for themselves. The hidden truth is that these choices can create pain in others by denying a reality God designed.

I cannot be highly connected to everyone, so I do make choices about closeness. Those choices affect the degree of shared outcomes. The closer the connection, the more outcomes we share. Distance reduces sharing, yet modern life still proves how connected we are. The choices of one person can reach across oceans and still touch my world.

God designed life so that none of us is complete alone. First and foremost, I need God to be whole. I was created to be a home for His presence. I also need human connection to be whole. Oneness is not the question. The question is how I will handle it. I can deny it, lash out in bitterness, or choose to love.

Reflection Question

Where am I resisting “oneness” through independence, isolation, control, or broken promises, and what fear or desire is driving that resistance instead of love for God and neighbor?

Prayer

Father, You made us for oneness with You and with others. Show me where my choices are harming shared outcomes. Cleanse my heart from fear, pride, and self-protection. Teach me to walk in truth and love, and give me the humility to honor covenant, connection, and responsibility. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Today’s Step of Obedience

Identify one relationship where you have “pulled away” or left something unresolved. Within the next 24 hours, take one measurable step: send a text or make a call that (1) tells the truth, (2) takes ownership of your part, and (3) offers one specific action to repair trust (apology, repayment plan, meeting time, or follow-through).
