Icy-blue image of open hands receiving soft light, representing the Heart Change principle that value cannot be achieved but must be received from God and through healthy connection.

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” — John 15:5, NKJV

Heart Change Insight

Sometimes the first clue that something has shifted is not that we are doing something wrong.

We may be helping someone we love, serving at church, leading a team, taking care of our family, or working toward something we genuinely believe matters. Nothing about the activity looks wrong. Yet somewhere along the way, we become more controlling, more irritated when things do not go according to plan, more pressured to keep everything moving, or more exhausted by something we still care deeply about.

What happened?

The desire itself may still be good. The problem may be that we have gradually begun trying to supply through our own strength what we were created to receive from God.

I call this good flesh. Good flesh can be difficult to recognize because it often looks good from the outside. We may be responsible, caring, productive, helpful, faithful, or hardworking. The activity itself may even be connected to something God created us to care about. But good behavior does not tell us where the life behind it is coming from.

Jesus gives us a simple picture in John 15. He is the vine; we are the branches. A branch can bear fruit, but it cannot be the source of its own life. It was never designed to be, and neither were we.

Jesus also tells His followers, “You are the light of the world” (Matthew 5:14, NKJV). We are meant to give light. We are meant to express something of His life wherever He has placed us. But we were never meant to be the source. The light we give is received before it is expressed.

That's why we can be doing something good and still find pressure, control, irritation, or resentment beginning to flow through us. Matthew 12:34 says, “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.” What comes out of us can give us a window into what has been flowing within us.

Maybe resentment begins showing up while we are helping someone we genuinely care about. Maybe we are serving God but becoming increasingly controlling about how everything has to happen. Maybe every interruption starts feeling like a threat to what we are trying to accomplish. One reaction does not tell the whole story, and the point is not to condemn ourselves for having it. It can, however, give us a reason to stop and notice.

What is flowing through my heart right now, and what is its source?

We were designed for God’s life to flow through us, not for us to manufacture a human version of His life. This is what makes good flesh so deceptive. Good flesh and godliness can look remarkably similar from the outside. The difference is the source.

You Were Never Meant to Be the Source

Our own strength has limits. Eventually our wisdom, patience, energy, and ability to control an outcome run out. We may respond by trying harder, tightening our grip, or blaming the people who seem to be making everything more difficult. Or we can allow that limit to bring us to a place of humility.

I was never meant to be the source.

That realization is not defeat. God does not ask us to produce His life for Him. He invites us to remain connected to Him, receive what we need, and cooperate with what He is doing.

The desire that started all of this may still be good. We may not need to stop caring, serving, leading, helping, or doing the work God has given us. We may need to recognize that somewhere along the way, we started trying to produce through our own strength what only God can supply.

You were never meant to be the source.

Reflection Question

Where are you doing something genuinely good but noticing more pressure, control, irritation, or exhaustion? What might God be showing you about where you are drawing your strength?

Prayer

Father, thank You for the good desires and purposes You have placed in my heart. Show me where I have begun depending on my own strength instead of receiving from You. Help me recognize when pressure, control, irritation, or striving are revealing that shift. Teach me to remain connected to You and receive what I need for the work You have given me. Let Your life flow through me instead of asking me to produce what only You can supply. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Today's Step of Obedience

Choose one good thing you feel responsible for today.

Before you push harder, pause and ask:

Am I trying to be the source here?

Name what you are trying to supply through your own strength. Then ask God what you need to receive from Him before you take the next step.
