Daily Devotional: Connecting with Trust

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5, NKJV)

Though I may see myself as the master of my domain, I am truly only a master of my connections. My connections, who or what I trust, will determine my future. That is a humbling thought because most of us like to believe we are independent. We want to believe our choices come from our own intelligence, discipline, and personal strength. In reality, we are constantly drawing from whatever we are connected to.

Trust is the vehicle by which strength transfers. When I trust God, I deliberately connect with Him, and I am able to draw from His strength. When I trust godly people, I connect with what God has placed in them, and I can receive encouragement, wisdom, correction, and hope. When I trust unhealthy people, I also draw from them. I may draw suspicion, bitterness, fear, lust, manipulation, or rebellion.

Connection always involves some level of exchange. Where there is a high level of connection, there is a high level of trust. Where there is a lower level of connection, there is a lower level of trust. This is why relationships matter so much. They are not neutral. They are either pouring life into me, death into me, or some mixture of both.

Many people try to change while staying connected to the same sources that strengthened their bondage. That will not work. I cannot draw life from a source that is pouring death into me.

At the same time, many people resist healthy connection because it feels uncomfortable. If I grew up around anger, healthy peace may feel suspicious. If manipulation were normal, honesty may feel unsafe. If rejection shaped me, love may feel threatening. What is familiar often feels right, even when it is destructive.

This is why trust must be guided by truth, not by comfort. I only trust what I submit to. If I say I trust God but refuse to submit to His Word, I do not truly trust Him. If I say I trust a godly mentor, but only follow advice that matches my instincts, I am still trusting myself. Real trust means I allow a healthy source to guide me when everything inside me wants to return to the old pattern.

That is where transformation begins. I stop asking, “What feels right?” and start asking, “What source is producing life?” I look at outcomes. I look at fruit. I look at consistency. Then I choose connection based on life, not familiarity.

My future will not be determined by my intentions alone. My future will be determined by what I trust enough to obey.

Reflection Question

What relationships or influences are pouring strength into me, and which ones are draining life from me?

Prayer

Father, show me what I truly trust. Help me recognize the sources I am drawing from, whether life-giving or destructive. Teach me to trust You enough to submit to You, especially when my instincts disagree. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Make two lists: “Life-giving connections” and “Death-producing connections.” Choose one life-giving connection to strengthen this week and one destructive influence to reduce.
