Daily Devotional: Every Good Gift

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights.” (James 1:17, NKJV)

Every good gift comes from God our Father. That statement is easy to say but difficult to fully believe. We live in a culture that teaches people to pull themselves up by their own bootstraps. We celebrate self-made success, personal drive, and independent achievement. But spiritually speaking, the self-made person is a myth.

Everything good has to be received.

Faith itself is a gift from God. The ability to respond to grace is a gift from God. The courage to make a hard choice is a gift from God. The strength to keep choosing when the old patterns pull is a gift from God. If anything truly good is flowing through us, it did not originate in us. It came from the Father.

This does not erase our responsibility. We still choose. We still obey. We still surrender. But we do not generate the life of God by our own strength. We receive it, then we respond with it. That is a very different way of living.

Reflection Question

What good thing am I still trying to produce in my own strength instead of receiving from God?

Prayer

Father, teach me to receive every good gift from You. Free me from the myth that I have to create my own value or strength. Fill me with life so I can give life to others. Make me a receiver before I try to become a giver. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Spend ten minutes today naming good gifts God has already given you. Thank Him for each one, then ask Him to show you how one of those gifts can be shared with someone else.
