Daily Devotional: Happiness is a Byproduct

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the LORD, to do righteousness and justice, that the LORD may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.” (Genesis 18:19, NKJV)

As a culture, we tend to put pleasure first. We eat what tastes good. We buy what we want. We chase what feels exciting. We assume we are entitled to good outcomes regardless of how we live. We want health without discipline, intimacy without character, blessing without obedience, and happiness without surrender.

In biblical thinking, happiness is not the goal. Happiness is a by-product. The athlete who pursues pleasure will not win the race. The athlete who disciplines himself, trains consistently, and sacrifices comfort for the sake of the goal will experience a deeper joy. He may even win the contest. The joy comes as the result of living life according to its design.

When we pursue happiness directly, it tends to run away from us. The more we chase pleasure, the more demanding our appetites become. The more we serve immediate desire, the less capable we become of receiving lasting joy. Pleasure can be enjoyed rightly, but it cannot be worshiped safely.

Genesis 18 gives us a different picture. God chose Abraham for a purpose that was much larger than Abraham’s personal happiness. God wanted Abraham to command his children and household after him so they would keep the way of the Lord, doing righteousness and justice. God’s promise to Abraham was tied to a generational purpose. It was for the greater good.

God’s plan was not centered on Abraham’s comfort. It was centered on Abraham becoming a man through whom blessing could flow to future generations. Abraham received from God as he made room for God. He prepared himself and his household to walk in God’s ways. The promise came through a lifestyle of faith, obedience, and formation.

This is the pattern of God. He does not call us into discipline because He is against joy. He calls us into discipline because He wants a deeper joy than momentary pleasure can ever produce. God comes to those who make room for Him. If my life is crowded with self, appetite, and short-term desire, there is little room for the work of God. If I make room through obedience, restraint, worship, truth, and love, I begin to receive what God has spoken.

“What I consistently care about is who I am.” If I consistently care about pleasure, I am becoming a pleasure-driven person. If I consistently care about the greater good, I am becoming a person of love. Love thinks beyond the moment. Love thinks beyond self. Love asks, “What will this produce in the people connected to me? What will this produce in the years to come?”

Happiness comes as a result of living life the way God designed it. When I walk the path God has called me to walk, joy follows. When I chase joy apart from God’s path, heartache follows. The greater good is not the enemy of happiness. It is the pathway to the only happiness that can last.

Reflection Question

Where have I been pursuing happiness directly instead of making room for God and trusting joy to come as a result?

Prayer

Father, forgive me for the times I have chased pleasure as if it were life. Teach me to seek You, make room for You, and live for the greater good. Build in me the character to choose what is right over what is easy. Let lasting joy come as the fruit of obedience. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Choose one small area of comfort or pleasure to surrender today. Use that space for prayer, Scripture, serving someone, or strengthening a relationship.
