Daily Devotional: The Big Picture

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but happy is he who keeps the law.” (Proverbs 29:18, NKJV)

Many immediate battles change when we step back and look at the bigger picture. In the moment, a conflict can feel enormous. The need to be respected, heard, understood, or vindicated can become so strong that we lose perspective. We may say things, demand things, or do things that damage the very future we claim to want.

One helpful question is, “So what do you want?” If that question is framed around a five- or ten-year vision, many present battles begin to shrink. What do I want my family to look like five years from now? What kind of marriage do I want? What kind of relationship do I want with my children? What kind of church culture do I want to help build? What kind of person do I want to become?

The best part of life comes out of quality, long-term relationships. Quality, long-term relationships only happen when we grow up. Many times, once we get a larger view of life, we realize that our immediate demand is not nearly as important as our long-term outcome. My desire to be respected in this moment may not be as important as my need to control my temper. My need to win the argument may not be as important as building trust. My impulse to withdraw may not be as important as learning to stay present in love.

The one another lifestyle continually points us to the big picture. It recognizes that all spiritual authority is collective. We share outcomes with our families, churches, and communities. We do not get to opt out of the consequences of others’ choices, and others do not get to opt out of ours. That reality calls us into adult thinking. Children focus on immediate wants. Adults make choices based on long-term outcomes in the real world.

Religious communities often fall into magical thinking. They assume God can do anything, so they can do whatever they want and still be blessed. That is not the God of Scripture. God is righteous. He says words matter. Actions matter. Sin matters. He paid for sin through Christ. He did not ignore it.

Adults living the one another lifestyle ask, “What will it take for the whole community to move forward?” Then they work to win hearts in that direction. They do not merely push through decisions. They slow down, explain, listen, sacrifice, and build trust. They understand that trust is one of the most powerful indicators of future victory.

If all I care about is winning the moment, I may plow through and get my way. Yet the cost may be trust. When trust is broken, future influence is weakened. If I care about long-term fruit, I will take the time to build foundations. I will care about the heart, not only the issue.

The big picture changes the battle. It helps me choose maturity over ego, trust over control, and shared life over momentary victory.

Reflection Question

What short-term battle am I treating as more important than the long-term relationship or outcome?

Prayer

Father, lift my eyes beyond the immediate battle. Help me see the long-term outcomes of my words and actions. Teach me to make adult choices that build trust, strengthen relationships, and serve the greater good. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Write down one five-year goal for a key relationship or community. Then identify one current behavior that helps that future and one behavior that harms it.
