Daily Devotional: Who Are Your People?

“He who walks with wise men will be wise, but the companion of fools will be destroyed.” (Proverbs 13:20, NKJV)

Every person flees somewhere in trouble, and many times we flee to people. Some flee to those who match the normals of their growing-up years. Some flee to people who excuse them. Some flee to people who feed fear, anger, lust, bitterness, or self-pity. Some flee to someone of the opposite sex, only to discover later that attraction was shaped by old wounds and familiar dysfunction. Some flee to godly people whose lives carry peace, truth, and strength.

Where a person connects will determine his future. This is not an exaggeration. I can only draw strength from what I trust, and I only trust what I submit to. If I run to people who are not connected to God, I will likely draw from what they carry. If they carry fear, I will draw fear. If they carry bitterness, I will draw bitterness. If they carry compromise, I will draw compromise. If they carry life, I can draw life.

This is why life-giving relationships are so important. There is nothing like tasting a relationship with someone who is truly seeking God with his whole heart. When we connect with a God-connected person, we begin to experience multiplied strength. We learn what healthy trust feels like. We see what it looks like when someone carries the presence of God into real life. That kind of relationship can become a bridge toward trusting God more deeply.

Unfortunately, many people have lived mostly connected to those who peddle death. They have experienced betrayal, manipulation, domination, rejection, or chaos. Because of that, they do not naturally believe relationship can be a key to transformation. They may know they need people, yet their instincts tell them to withdraw or to choose the same kinds of people who have always hurt them.

This is where wise, forceful action is needed. Not forcing intimacy recklessly, but intentionally moving toward life. I must ask, “Who in my life helps me trust God? Who helps me obey? Who carries peace? Who speaks truth to me? Who strengthens the God-submitted part of me?” Then I must give those relationships more room.

At the same time, I must ask, “Who pulls me toward death? Who feeds my excuses? Who strengthens my old patterns? Who makes rebellion feel normal?” Those relationships may not need to disappear completely, but their influence must be rightly ordered.

Jesus does not call me into isolation. He calls me to abide in Him and to connect with His body. Trust God. Trust godly people. That is not weakness. That is how life works.

Reflection Question

What relationships have been life to me, and what relationships have strengthened old patterns?

Prayer

Father, show me the people I run to when trouble comes. Help me recognize relationships that pour life into me and relationships that pull me toward death. Give me courage to seek godly connection and humility to receive strength through others. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Reach out to one life-giving person today. Ask for prayer, encouragement, or counsel. Also identify one relationship whose influence needs a boundary.
