“I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life…” - Deuteronomy 30:19a (NKJV)
Heart change rarely happens by accident. Most of the time it is forged through consistent choices over an extended period of time. There is a selfish part in every one of us that does not instinctively like the will of God. That selfish part prefers comfort, control, and immediate relief. If heart change depended on what I naturally prefer, I would not change much at all. The deeper transformation happens when I repeatedly submit to what my flesh does not like.
Heart change comes through consistent heart choice.
When Scripture says we are changed “from glory to glory,” that is not usually a single dramatic leap. It is often a thousand small decisions that keep turning the heart toward God. Those choices become grooves in the soul. Over time, what once felt unnatural becomes normal. That is how spiritual formation works. It is not forced behavior. It is a chosen direction.
This also helps me understand a hard truth: forced behavior does not guarantee heart change. It can produce compliance. It can shape external habits for a season. It can even create an environment where a person learns what he is capable of. Yet it cannot create love for God. It cannot produce true surrender. Only choice can do that.
God’s approach to transformation honors the human will. He does not treat people like machines. He treats them like image-bearers. He calls. He invites. He commands. He warns. Then He asks, “Will you follow?” Real heart change requires a real yes.
So today I name the real battle. The battle is not only against temptation. The battle is against self-rule. The flesh wants the right to choose whatever it wants without consequence. God calls me to choose Him and to accept that His ways carry life. If I want heart change, I will need consistent heart choice.
Reflection Question
Where do I feel resistance to God most strongly right now, and what does that reveal about my heart?
Prayer
Father, show me where my selfish part is resisting You. Strengthen me to choose You consistently, not merely when it is easy. Teach me to connect with You in my inner life and to live from that connection. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Obedience Step for Today
Identify one recurring moment when you drift into self-rule (tone, impulse, habit). Decide ahead of time one simple obedience you will practice the next time that moment appears.
