Daily Devotional: The Right Kind of Effort

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“So then those who are in the flesh cannot please God.” - Romans 8:8 (NKJV)

Human effort is required for God to work, yet the wrong kind of effort will shut Him down. That sounds contradictory until I recognize that not all effort is the same. There is an effort of self and an effort of faith.

Effort of self is driven by confidence in my ability to fix things. It may be intense. It may be responsible. It may even look noble. Yet underneath it carries a message: “I can resolve this.” That posture shuts down connection because it does not need God. When I function that way, I am left to handle the situation on my own.

Effort of faith is also intense, yet it is aimed at dependence. It recognizes, “I need God.” It uses energy to seek Him, wait on Him, listen for His voice, and then obey while staying connected. It never treats God as a last resort. It turns to Him first and stays attentive each step along the way.

This is one of the key ways to understand becoming blessable. Blessing is tied to a grace lifestyle, and grace is received through faith. That means I must learn to recognize when my effort is actually self-reliance in disguise.

One way to detect this is “heart flows.” Two people can say similar words and do similar actions, yet the spiritual feel is different. A person who believes in his own ability carries a certain strain. A person who knows he needs God carries a different kind of steadiness. The actions may look alike, yet one is fueled by self and one is fueled by trust.

The Scriptures describe mercy and grace in ways that remind me that God is just. Mercy has a cost. Mercy to the human race cost God the death of His Son. God does not hand out spiritual outcomes apart from spiritual realities. The natural and the spiritual are tied together. The cross opened the way for the outpouring of the Spirit. In a similar pattern, human willingness to lay down self can release God’s power into a situation. Faith invites God to work because faith honors His role as God.

This also reframes intercession and sacrifice. When a person lays down pride, lays down self-protection, and steps into a posture of dependence, something changes in the spiritual atmosphere. The person is no longer trying to control outcomes. He is inviting God to rule.

So today I choose the right kind of effort. I will use energy to make room, to seek, to listen, and to obey. Yet I will refuse the strain that comes from believing I must manage everything. I am not called to be my own savior. I am called to be a temple for His presence.

This is the place where blessing becomes available. God flows through those who make room for Him.

Reflection Question

Where am I trying to resolve a problem primarily through my own strength, with little dependence on God?

Prayer

Father, expose the places where my effort is actually self-reliance. Teach me the effort of faith, the effort that seeks You first and stays connected as I obey. Let Your grace flow through my life rather than my own strain. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Before you act on your biggest pressure point today, pause and pray: “Lord, I need You.” Wait in silence for one minute, then take the next step with a conscious dependence on Him.
