Daily Devotional: New Creation, Old Nature, Real Growth

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17, NKJV)

When a person truly comes to Christ, something new is created. Scripture calls it new creation. That does not mean all old patterns vanish overnight. It means a new life has been planted in the middle of the heart. There is now a new desire, a new conscience, a new pull toward God. Many people can describe this early shift. Things feel different. Conviction is sharper. Worship is sweeter. Hope is stronger. The heart begins to awaken.

At the same time, many things still feel the same. Old habits remain. Old triggers remain. Old fears remain. That can confuse people. They assume that if they were truly saved, they would no longer struggle. Scripture does not support that assumption. Paul’s struggle in Romans 7 happened in the context of a sincere walk with God. The struggle itself was evidence that something new was alive in him. The person without new life does not fight the old nature. He simply follows it.

God did not save us to keep us the same. He saved us to transform us. The goal is not simply a destination. The goal is Christlikeness. The evidence of true life is growth.

So how do we measure growth? By direction. The book of 1 John uses strong language to draw a line between occasional failure and continuing in sin as a lifestyle. A person who continues without turning, without repentance, without hunger for obedience should be concerned. A person who fights, repents, and keeps turning toward God is showing the direction of life.

Today I give myself permission to be in process without excusing sin. I reject condemnation, and I reject complacency. The new creation in me is real. The old nature in me is real. Growth is the evidence of which one is being fed. Direction is the evidence of who is Lord.

Reflection Question

What changed in me when I first turned to Christ, and what patterns still need to be reshaped?

Prayer

Father, thank You for making me new in Christ. Teach me to walk out that new life with steady obedience. Help me fight the old nature by the power of the Holy Spirit. Guard me from condemnation and from complacency. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Write two columns: “New life signs” and “Old nature patterns.” Choose one old pattern and take one Spirit-led step today that weakens it (confession, boundary, accountability, replacement habit).
