“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5, NKJV)
There is a danger that shows up after growth: pride. A person begins to obey, begins to gain insight, begins to see God at work, and then begins trusting his own wisdom again. That drift is subtle because it feels like maturity. Yet the result is often the same as before: self returns to the throne.
Solomon is one of the clearest warnings. He was given wisdom beyond any man. Yet he disobeyed God’s Word by taking many wives. Then he accommodated their desires and built temples to idols. One disobedience led to another. Before long, the man who could see so clearly became a man drowning in vanity. His wisdom became foolishness because his obedience failed.
The safeguard is not knowledge alone. The safeguard is continued submission: to Scripture, to the Spirit, and to godly counsel.
To stay Spirit-focused takes determined effort day after day. The question remains simple: am I doing what is right, or what seems right to me? There is a difference. Finding the difference and choosing life requires humility, Scripture, obedience, and community.
Reflection Question
Where have I been leaning on my own understanding instead of remaining submitted to God?
Prayer
Father, guard me from trusting my own wisdom. Keep me submitted to Your Word and sensitive to Your Spirit. Give me humility that welcomes correction and obedience that keeps me on the path of life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Obedience Step for Today
Create one safeguard today: pick a trusted person and give them permission to question your decision-making in one area. Tell them, “If you see me drifting, I want you to say something.”
