Daily Devotional: Receive First, Then Give Life

“Freely you have received, freely give.” (Matthew 10:8, NKJV)

As human beings, we desperately need someone to believe in us. God believed in us. He believed in a handful of disciples so much that He turned the future spread of the gospel over to them. That is what fathers do. They take risks on their children that say, “I believe in you. You are worth my love and my sacrifice.”

Ever since the fall, human beings have struggled with insecurity. Men often feel like they do not measure up. Women struggle with self-image. We lack a deep sense of value, and then we pass that insecurity on to our children, our families, our churches, and those we mentor.

The Father gave the solution for our crisis of worth. He sent His Son to die for us. He paid the ultimate price to declare us worthy of His love. The question is whether we will receive that gift. If we receive it, will we pass it on to the next generation?

You cannot give away what you do not have. If I have not received value, I will struggle to give value. If I have not received love, I may use people to meet my need for approval. If I have not received strength, I may become impatient with weakness. If I have not received life from the Father, I cannot become a reliable giver of life to others.

Until we have received, we are mostly powerless. When life has been sown into us, we can hear. We can respond. We can make better decisions. The power is not our own. It comes from God the Father, often through a father, mentor, or lifegiver.

So the call is simple, but not easy: receive first. Receive from the Father. Receive from those He has placed in your life who carry life, wisdom, encouragement, correction, and love. Honor those voices enough to receive what God is giving through them. Stop fixating on death dealers who cannot give what your heart needs. Find a father. Receive life.

Then give life. Be a mentor. Be a nurturer. Be a value giver. Be a father in the broadest and best sense of that word. Look for those who need someone to believe in them. Look for those who have not yet received enough strength to make the choice they need to make. Look for the God-created purpose and beauty inside them and speak to it.

The best mentors give life to those they nurture. Life comes from His Spirit to our spirit, to the hearts of others. This is the work of God. It activates the very life of God within an individual. Receive first. Then go and become a catalyst for the release of God’s life in others.

Reflection Question

Have I truly received life from the Father, and who am I called to help receive life next?

Prayer

Father, help me receive the life, value, and strength You are offering me. Show me the people You have sent to help me grow. Then make me a lifegiver to others. Let Your Spirit flow to my spirit and through me to the hearts of those I nurture. In Jesus’ name, amen.
