Daily Devotional: The Power to Connect

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs 18:21, NKJV)

God does not create a human heart the same way He creates a tree. When God created a tree, He spoke and it was finished. When He created a human heart, He spoke and the work was just beginning. That is because the shaping of a human heart is interactive. It is interactive between God and the individual, but it is also interactive between God and the entire human race.

Every place we connect is a place of creation. That is true for good, and it is true for evil. We are not independent beings. We are continually connecting, receiving, giving, shaping, and being shaped. Wherever there is a spoken word, a promise, a look, a tone, a shared experience, or a spiritual flow between two people, something is being written on a heart.

That is why the power to connect is the power to create, either life or death.

Words matter because words carry spiritual substance. In days gone by, people would say, “My word is my bond.” What I say becomes a form of promise. Every word carries some level of influence. It will either build trust or weaken trust. It will either create life or create confusion. It will either strengthen the heart or shape it toward death.

When a person walks in deceit, he is not only speaking deceptive words. He is shaping his own heart into deceit. He is also passing that influence into everyone connected to him. His children feel it. His spouse feels it. His friends feel it. His ministry feels it. The succeeding generations are touched by it. Our lives are continually creating life or death in others.

This becomes even stronger when we enter covenant. A covenant increases shared outcomes. Marriage, parenting, church family, ministry, and deep friendships all create shared spiritual consequence. When we bind ourselves to others through promises, we become accountable for the life or death flowing through that connection.

My most significant life choices are my connections. That means I must stop treating relationships casually. Who I listen to matters. Who I trust matters. Who I judge matters. Who I resent matters. Who I imitate matters. Who I make promises to matters. These connections are writing on my heart, and my life is writing on theirs.

If we carry life from God, life can flow through us to others. If we carry bitterness, lust, fear, deceit, pride, or judgment, those flows also create. The question is not whether I am shaping others. I am. The question is what kind of creation is flowing through my connections.

God wants our connections to become places where His life is multiplied.

Reflection Question

What kind of spiritual substance is most often flowing through my words and relationships: life, peace, truth, love, fear, deceit, judgment, or something else?

Prayer

Father, make me aware of the creative power of my connections. Forgive me for careless words, broken promises, and spiritual flows that have brought death instead of life. Fill me with Your Spirit so what flows through me strengthens, heals, and creates life in others. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Choose one important connection today. Speak one intentional word of life, truth, encouragement, or blessing into that person.
