Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:4, NKJV)

The best mentors give life to those they nurture. Life comes from His Spirit to our spirit, and then to the hearts of others. That means the most important question in any fathering, parenting, mentoring, or discipling relationship is not merely, “What am I teaching?” The deeper question is, “What is being transferred spirit to spirit?”

Many times, people in Christian circles focus on the discipline part of Ephesians 6:4. They think if they regulate closely enough, correct firmly enough, and punish consistently enough, the child will turn out right. Their idea of discipline often follows the cultural pattern of demanding performance. But Paul begins by saying, “Do not provoke your children to wrath.” That matters. Discipline that provokes anger, fear, shame, or rebellion may produce outward behavior for a season, but it is not necessarily producing life.

A biblical approach recognizes that a child does not automatically have what he needs to make a simple choice to do right. The law of sin and death is evident from the beginning. Children do not have to be taught selfishness. “My toy” starts early. Entitlement does not need a curriculum. So how do we help a child gain the power to choose what is right?

Punishment may be needed at times, but punishment is not the first step and should never be the only tool. A good father knows what a child can and cannot do. He understands age-appropriate behavior. He does not demand maturity that has not yet been formed. He does not use intimidation to force a response while ignoring the cost to the heart.

Harsh punishment can produce temporary behavior patterns, but the life of the child will be shaped by heart choice. If the father only intimidates, manipulates, compares, or demands productivity, something is being sown. Bad spiritual flows sow bad fruit, even if Bible verses are used to enforce them. In fact, it may be worse when Scripture is used harshly, because the child may begin to equate the character of the earthly father with the character of the heavenly Father.

Training is different from intimidation. Proverbs 22:6 says to train up a child in the way he should go. Training implies involvement. The father comes alongside. He does things with the child. He pours life into the child. He sees the heart of the child for who God created him to be and helps set that child free to become that person.

I can’t give away what I don’t have. If what is flowing from me is shame, pressure, irritation, or comparison, that is what I am sowing. If what is flowing from me is life received from God, then life can be transferred spirit to spirit.

Reflection Question

What is the most common spirit-to-spirit transfer that others receive from me: life, shame, pressure, peace, encouragement, fear, or something else?

Prayer

Father, make me aware of what is flowing from my spirit to others. Forgive me for using pressure, intimidation, or performance demands in places where You wanted life to flow. Help me receive from You so I can pour life, value, and strength into those around me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Before correcting, teaching, or guiding someone today, pause and ask, “Where is my spirit right now?” Invite God to fill you with His life before you speak.
