Daily Devotional: When Wanting Change Isn't Enough

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.” (Romans 8:2, NKJV)

In addiction and recovery circles, we often hear someone say, “He just didn’t want it bad enough.” There are times when a person does not truly want change, but most of the time, wanting it is not the whole issue. There is a force at work that is stronger than human desire. Scripture calls it the law of sin and death.

Jesus said that whoever commits sin is a slave of sin. That means sin is not merely a bad choice. Sin becomes a master. Once I give myself to a pattern, there is a pull that wants to draw me back into that pattern. There is a tendency in my own flesh, and there is also a demonic realm ready to tempt me back into bondage. I may genuinely want to be free, yet still feel dragged toward the very thing I hate.

This is not only true for the addict. It is true for every sinner. The addict’s sin may be more visible, more socially unacceptable, or more obviously destructive, but the law underneath is the same. Sin enslaves. Pride enslaves. Lust enslaves. Bitterness enslaves. Fear enslaves. Control enslaves. Self-pity enslaves. Whatever I repeatedly obey begins to rule me.

That is why “want to” is not enough. If wanting change were enough, most people would already be free. People want to stop reacting in anger. They want to stop returning to unhealthy relationships. They want to stop sabotaging good things. They want to follow through, forgive, obey, and live with peace. Yet the pull remains.

Freedom requires strength from outside of self. Trust is the vehicle by which we draw that strength. When I connect with God, I am trusting Him. When I connect with godly people, I am trusting them to some degree. Through that connection, something transfers. Strength, hope, perspective, courage, and truth can move from one person into another. This is how God designed life to work.

The great deception of sin is that it convinces me to isolate and then demands I overcome in my own strength. That is impossible. The law of sin and death is stronger than self-effort. The Spirit of life in Christ Jesus is stronger than the law of sin and death. The question is not whether I have enough desire. The question is where I am connected and from whom I am drawing strength.

I can only draw strength from what I trust. If I trust only myself, my future will look like my past, only worse. If I learn to trust God and connect with healthy, godly people, I begin to draw from a different source. That is where freedom begins.

Reflection Question

Where in my life do I keep doing something I do not want to do, and what does that reveal about my need for outside strength?

Prayer

Father, I confess that wanting change is not enough. I need strength beyond myself. Help me stop trusting my own willpower and start drawing from You. Lead me into healthy connections that bring life, truth, and freedom. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Write down one area where “wanting to change” has not been enough. Then name one godly source of strength you can intentionally connect with this week: prayer, Scripture, accountability, a mentor, a recovery group, or a trusted believer.
