Heart Change Insight

Sometimes it’s hard to admit, “I was wrong,” because it sounds so close to “There’s something wrong with me.” We may want to make things right, yet find ourselves defending ourselves before we’ve even heard what happened.

A friend says, “I felt dismissed when you interrupted me.” That’s something I need to consider. Did I interrupt? Was I more interested in making my point than hearing my friend? I can ask, listen, and apologize. But my self-talk may already be saying, “I always mess things up. Why do I even try?” Now the conversation is about more than an interruption. I’m trying to protect myself from a verdict about who I am.

Doing Something Wrong Doesn’t Define You

What comes out of us in a moment deserves our attention. If I was impatient or selfish, God may be showing me something in my heart that needs to change.

At the same time, one moment isn’t the whole story of a person. The thought “I always get it wrong” may have been taking shape in my heart long before this friend spoke. One correction touches it, and suddenly it feels as though my friend has said there is something wrong with me. They may have said nothing of the kind.

I can do something wrong without that wrong thing becoming my identity. That doesn’t excuse what I did. In fact, when I don’t have to defend who I am, I’m freer to admit what I did. “I interrupted you, and I’m sorry” is an honest response. “I am a failure” is a different claim, and I don’t have to agree with it in order to change. Not every thought deserves agreement.

Romans 8:1 says there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Doing something wrong doesn’t define you. God gives us room to face our behavior without hiding from it or turning it into a judgment about our worth. What came out of me is something I can examine with Him. Then I can make things right with my friend.

Reflection Question

Think of something you said or did that you wish you had handled differently. Are you dealing with what you did, or have you turned it into a judgment about who you are?

Prayer

Father, help me be honest about what I say and do. Show me what needs to change in my heart, and help me make things right with the people I have hurt. When my self-talk tells me that a mistake defines me, remind me of the truth You speak over me in Christ. Thank You that I can come to You without hiding and without condemnation. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Today's Step of Obedience

Write down one specific thing you need to own, without adding “I always” or “I am” to it. Ask God what needs to change and, if another person was affected, take one step to make it right.
