The Fruit Reveals the Source
Jesus taught that the nature of something is eventually revealed by what it produces. In Matthew 7:15–20, He was warning His followers about false prophets—people whose outward appearance could conceal what was actually operating within them. Appearances alone were not enough. Jesus told His disciples to look at the fruit.
That principle gives us a practical way to discern the influences at work in our own lives. A thought, impulse, or spiritual impression may sound convincing in the moment, but we also need to consider where it is leading us and what it is producing in us over time.
Fear can energize us. It can make us feel alert, driven, and intensely focused. We may become determined to solve the problem, control the outcome, protect ourselves, or prevent something painful from happening. That energy can feel productive because we are doing something. Yet when fear becomes the source of our strength, its fruit often reveals it. We become increasingly agitated, compulsive, suspicious, controlling, isolated, or exhausted. We may be energized, but we are not being renewed.
Test the Source, Then Watch the Fruit
This is one reason spiritual discernment matters. Scripture tells us that spiritual opposition is real, and there are times when fear, accusation, temptation, confusion, or despair may be spiritually energized. We should neither ignore that possibility nor assume that every anxious feeling or difficult experience is demonic. Our bodies can respond to exhaustion, illness, grief, trauma, conflict, and uncertainty. Our souls can carry pain that needs honesty, healing, wise counsel, and safe connection. Mature discernment allows us to acknowledge the spiritual realm without using it to explain everything.
We also cannot decide that something is from God simply because it feels comfortable. God may correct us, confront us, or ask us to obey when obedience is costly. His correction, however, remains consistent with His Word and His character. He does not manipulate us through condemnation, frantic pressure, or hopelessness. He leads us toward truth, repentance, freedom, love, and life.
This is why we test what we are sensing. We compare it with Scripture. We consider whether it reflects the character of Jesus—loving, truthful, kind, good, and directed toward service rather than self-exaltation. We invite safe, spiritually mature believers to help us discern what we may not be able to see clearly on our own. We also give the fruit time to become visible.
Paul describes the fruit of the Spirit as “love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” in Galatians 5:22–23. This fruit does not mean that life becomes easy or that we never feel sorrow, fear, or frustration. It means the Spirit of God is forming something within us that our circumstances do not have the authority to produce or take away.
God’s peace, for example, is not passivity. It gives us the freedom to act without being driven. His patience does not keep us from addressing a problem; it helps us respond without surrendering to urgency and control. His self-control does not make us powerless; it keeps another person’s behavior, an anxious thought, or a spiritual attack from deciding how we will live.
It can be helpful to notice what happens within us during the ordinary movements of the day. We may enter a conversation settled and leave feeling accused. We may begin a task with a desire to serve and gradually become consumed with performance. We may spend time in prayer, worship, or Scripture and recognize that the pressure within us has begun to loosen. These movements are worth noticing, not so that we become preoccupied with ourselves, but so that we can recognize what is influencing us and return to the Source of life.
Receive the Life of the Spirit
True spiritual empowerment does not come from trying harder to imitate spiritual fruit. It comes through communion with the Holy Spirit. Grace is more than forgiveness after we fail; it is also God’s strength working within us. As we wait on Him, receive from Him, and obey what He shows us, His life begins producing what effort alone cannot create. Spiritual authority grows through intimacy and obedience, and the evidence becomes increasingly tangible. People around us begin to encounter more peace, patience, love, and steadiness in the way we respond.
Jesus said that whoever believes in Him would have rivers of living water flowing from within (John 7:38). We cannot give what we have refused to receive. When we live from communion with God, however, His life begins flowing through us into our homes, conversations, decisions, and relationships.
When you are unsure about the source of what you are experiencing, look at the fruit. If an influence repeatedly leads you toward fear, accusation, compulsion, isolation, or despair, do not continue agreeing with it. Bring it into the light, test it against God’s Word, and invite trusted believers to stand with you. Then look again to Jesus and receive from Him. As His Spirit fills what fear once occupied, the fruit will increasingly reveal the Source.
Reflection Question
What fruit has been growing in my thoughts, choices, and relationships, and what might that reveal about the source from which I have been receiving?
Prayer
Holy Spirit, help me recognize what is influencing and energizing me without becoming fearful or condemning myself. Teach me to test what I receive by Scripture, the character of Jesus, wise counsel, and the fruit it produces. Where fear or self-reliance has been directing me, bring me back into communion with You. Fill me with Your life and grow love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control in me. Let what flows through my life reveal that I am connected to Jesus. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Today's Step of Obedience
Pause and ask, “Where is my spirit right now?”
Write down one influence, thought pattern, decision, or relationship that has been affecting you. Then prayerfully consider:
What fruit has this been producing in me?
Does it agree with Scripture and reflect the character of Jesus?
Is it moving me toward love, truth, peace, self-control, and safe connection?
Is there a trusted believer with whom I should test what I am discerning?
What is the next right, indicated step of obedience?
Do not pressure yourself to reach an instant conclusion. Slow the process down. Ask the Holy Spirit to make the source clearer through truth, wise counsel, and the fruit that becomes visible over time.
