The Part of the Story We Leave Out
Daily Devotional—Thursday, October 8, 2026

“But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another…” — 1 John 1:7, NKJV
Heart Change Insight
Someone asks about our childhood, and we hear ourselves say, “It was fine.” We remember good times and people who showed up for us. We mean those things when we say them. Yet there may be other memories we quietly step around.
Why is it so hard to say both? Sometimes telling the truth about what hurt feels like betraying people we love. We may have learned that being a good son or daughter means keeping the difficult parts of the story to ourselves. After a while, we stop telling ourselves the whole story too.
The part of the story we leave out can still be affecting our hearts. Maybe a raised voice makes me brace for trouble even now. Maybe I keep trying to prove I am worth someone's attention. If I call everything “fine,” I may never ask God why those responses are still so strong. The point isn't to put my family on trial. It's to notice what I have been carrying.
The Part of the Story We Leave Out
I can love my family and be grateful for what was good. I can also say, “That scared me,” or “I needed help and didn't know how to ask.” One truth doesn't cancel the other. Calling something that happened wrong doesn't mean I'm declaring the whole person worthless. And telling the truth about harm done to me does not make that harm my sin to confess.
1 John 1:7 connects walking in the light with fellowship. We don't have to manufacture a perfect family story to walk with God. We can bring Him the part we usually leave out and ask what it has taught our hearts to expect. When we need someone to walk with us, we can choose a safe, trustworthy person. We don't owe our whole story to everyone.
We can let God meet us in the story as it really was and allow Him to shape what comes out of us now.
Reflection Question
Is there a part of your family story you tend to call “fine” even though it still affects you? What might you say honestly to God about it?
Prayer
Father, thank You for the good I have received through my family. Help me be honest about what hurt without feeling that love requires me to deny it. Show me what I have carried into the way I respond today. Give me wisdom about whom I can trust as I bring difficult things into the light. Meet me with Your life and truth as I take the next step. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Today's Step of Obedience
In a private note or prayer, write two honest sentences: “I am grateful for…” and “Something that still affects me is…” Bring both to God. If this opens a painful story you need help carrying, consider one safe person you could speak with.
