What Are You Agreeing With?

“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” — James 4:7–8, NKJV
Heart Change Insight
“The power is not in a formula. The power is in Christ, in repentance, in agreement with His Word, and in the authority He gives His people.” — No Longer Captured — The Anxiety Iceberg
When we hear the word "agreement," we may picture a contract with our signature at the bottom. Most of the agreements shaping our inner lives don’t happen that deliberately. They develop quietly as we repeat a belief, interpret our experiences through it, and begin responding as though it must be true.
“I have to stay in control, or everything will fall apart.”
“No one will protect me, so I have to protect myself.”
“Nothing is ever going to change.”
“I am what happened to me.”
“God may help other people, but I’m on my own.”
At first, one of these may simply be a thought that passes through the mind. Over time, however, we may rehearse it, speak from it, and organize our choices around it. What began as a fearful interpretation can become a settled expectation. Without realizing it, we may start agreeing with a story that keeps us living in fear, striving, isolation, or defeat.
What Are You Agreeing With?
Agreement begins when we receive something as truth and allow it to determine how we see God, ourselves, other people, or the future.
This is why recognition matters. We can pause and ask, “What am I treating as truth right now? What does this belief say about God? What kind of response is it producing in me?”
Fear may tell us, “You are alone, so you must make something happen.”
Shame may say, “You are too damaged to change.”
Rejection may insist, “If people truly know you, they won't love you.”
These old beliefs can be spiritually energized until they feel urgent, undeniable, and impossible to resist.
Intensity does not make the message true. Familiarity does not give it authority. Repetition does not turn it into our identity.
In The Unseen Realm, we explore spiritual reality without making the enemy the center of our attention. Discernment helps us recognize what is influencing us, but our focus remains on Christ. We are not looking beneath every struggle for something frightening. We are learning to notice when an influence contradicts God’s truth and character so that we can stop partnering with it.
Submission Comes Before Resistance
James gives us an order that matters: submit to God, resist the devil, and draw near to God. (James 4:7–8, NKJV)
Spiritual resistance does not begin with us trying to sound forceful enough. It begins by bringing ourselves back under God’s authority. We become willing to tell Him the truth about what we have believed, how we have responded, and where fear or self-reliance has been directing us.
Repentance is not self-punishment. It is a change of direction.
We can say, “Father, I have been living as though everything depends on me. I have believed that I am alone and must control the outcome. I no longer want to build my life around that belief. Teach me to agree with what You say is true.”
Then we resist what has been pulling us away from Him. We can refuse the lie without pretending the struggle never existed. We can speak truth without treating our words as a magical formula.
As we discuss in Magical Thinking or Spiritual Authority?, words don't give us control over God, other people, or every circumstance. Spiritual authority is not found in repeating the right phrase with enough intensity. It flows from our relationship with Christ, our submission to Him, and our willingness to obey.
Freedom Is More Than Saying No
James does not end with resistance. He tells us to draw near to God. (James 4:7–8, NKJV)
Freedom is not only about what we stop agreeing with. It is also about the life we begin receiving.
If we reject fear but remain disconnected from God and safe people, the empty place may quickly fill with another form of striving. We need more than the removal of a lie. We need truth, peace, love, strength, and connection to become increasingly normal within us.
In True Empowerment from the Spirit Deep Dive series, we return to the Holy Spirit as the source of genuine power. We were not designed to manufacture freedom through determination alone. God gives us grace to recognize what is happening, change our agreement, take the next obedient step, and receive what we cannot produce for ourselves.
We don't have to remain captured by every belief that once felt normal. In Christ, we can recognize the agreement, bring it into the light, turn toward truth, and draw near to the One who gives life.
Reflection Question
What belief have I been treating as truth, and what does God say that gives me a different place to stand?
Prayer
Father, show me where I have come into agreement with fear, shame, self-reliance, or defeat. Help me recognize these places without condemning myself or blaming myself for every struggle I experience. I submit my thoughts, beliefs, words, and responses to You. Teach me to resist what contradicts Your truth and to draw near so I can receive Your life, peace, and strength. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Today's Step of Obedience
Write down one belief that has been directing your responses. Use the exact words you hear inside yourself.
Then ask:
What is this belief asking me to accept as true?
What kind of fruit does agreement with it produce?
What does God’s Word give me permission to believe instead?
Write one honest statement of agreement with God. Avoid making promises about an outcome you cannot control. Your statement might sound like:
“I do not know how this situation will unfold, but I am not alone. God is with me, and I can take the next faithful step.”
Read James 4:7–8 aloud. Submit this place to God, resist the lie, and spend a few quiet minutes drawing near to Him through prayer, worship, Scripture, or stillness.
