Icy-blue image of open hands receiving soft light, representing the Heart Change principle that value cannot be achieved but must be received from God and through healthy connection.

“Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me, and know my anxieties; And see if there is any wicked way in me, And lead me in the way everlasting.” — Psalm 139:23–24, NKJV

Heart Change Insight

“Triggers may reawaken old wounds. You may feel like you have dealt with something, only to have it rise again in a new situation.” — David A. Case, The Anxiety Iceberg eBook

Sometimes a reaction arrives before we understand it.

Someone’s tone changes, and we immediately become defensive. A message goes unanswered, and our thoughts begin racing. A plan changes, and we feel unusually angry or unsettled. Someone offers correction, and something inside us wants to argue, hide, shut down, or leave.

The present situation may be real and may need attention. Yet the intensity of our response can sometimes tell us that the present moment is touching something deeper.

We may wonder, “Why did that affect me so strongly?” or “Why am I still thinking about this?” Those questions don't have to become accusations. They can become invitations to look beneath the surface with God.

What's Happening Beneath the Surface?

A reaction may be connected to many things.

We may be responding to something genuinely unsafe, dishonest, or harmful in the present. We may be tired, hungry, sick, physically uncomfortable, or carrying more stress than we realized. A response may be influenced by an old belief, an earlier experience of rejection, a relational pattern, an unmet need, or fear about what might happen next. At times, spiritual pressure may also intensify fear, confusion, accusation, or the urge to act before we have discerned what is true.

We are whole people. Our physical, emotional, relational, cognitive, and spiritual lives affect one another. Wisdom does not require us to reduce every strong reaction to one explanation.

Not every difficult emotion is a spiritual attack. Not every reaction comes from childhood. Not every physical sensation means we are in danger. Not every concern is anxiety.

Sometimes something is wrong right now, and we need to respond. Sometimes something happening right now has opened a much older place within us. Often, both may be true.

When the Present Opens an Old File Drawer

In the File Drawers teaching from the Foundations for Heart Change series, we use the picture of a filing cabinet to describe how experiences with similar emotional or spiritual imprints can become connected within us.

Experiences of rejection may become connected with other experiences of rejection. Moments of abandonment, shame, failure, betrayal, or feeling unsafe may accumulate over time. When something in the present resembles one of those experiences, it can feel as though an entire drawer has opened.

Now we are not responding only to the sentence that was just spoken. We may also be feeling the accumulated weight of other messages, relationships, losses, and expectations stored in that same drawer.

That can make a five-minute interaction carry years of emotion.

Recognizing this does not mean we are broken beyond repair. It doesn't mean our feelings are wrong. It helps explain why the size of a reaction may not seem to fit the size of the immediate event.

The reaction is telling us that something needs attention, but not necessarily what that something is.

Curiosity Is Not Condemnation

King David prayed, “Search me, O God, and know my heart.” (Psalm 139:23, NKJV) He was not asking God to shame him. He was inviting God to help him see what he could not see clearly on his own.

We can bring the same invitation into a strong reaction:

“What happened inside me just now?”

“What did I believe this meant?”

“Does this remind me of another relationship or experience?”

“What is true right here, right now?”

We don't need to open every file in the drawer and uncover every painful event. Healing is not an endless search for hidden pain. Sometimes God brings one place into view because He is ready to meet us there with His truth, love, safe connection, wise care, or a practical next step.

The Goal Is Connection, Not Endless Analysis

Recognizing what lies beneath is a beginning, not the final goal.

Near the end of The Anxiety Iceberg, I make this distinction: “The deepest answer to anxiety is not a tool. The deepest answer is connection.”

Insight can help us name a pattern, but insight alone does not transform the heart. We need to receive from God. We need His truth to reach the places where fear, pain, and false beliefs have settled. We may need safe people who can listen, pray, encourage us, and help us remain connected to reality.

Spiritual transformation happens as old imprints lose their authority and we begin receiving new ones through the character of God, the work of the Holy Spirit, Scripture, healthy relationships, wise care, and repeated obedience.

The purpose of looking beneath the surface is not to become preoccupied with everything that has hurt us. It is to recognize what has been ruling us so that we can bring it into the presence of Christ.

A reaction is information. It is not our identity, and it doesn't have to set our direction.

We can pause. We can become curious. We can ask God what is happening. Then we can receive what we need and take the next faithful step.

Reflection Question

When my response feels stronger than what is happening right now, what might God be inviting me to notice beneath the surface?

Prayer

Father, search me and know my heart. When a strong reaction rises within me, help me notice it without judging or shaming myself. Give me discernment to recognize what belongs to the present moment and what may be connected to an older wound, belief, need, or pattern. Lead me toward Your truth, safe people, appropriate care, and the next right, indicated step. Teach me to abide in You and receive the life and peace You are offering. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Today's Step of Obedience

Choose one recent moment when your response felt stronger than you expected. Write four brief statements:

  1. What happened: Describe only the observable facts.

  2. What I felt: Name the emotions and physical sensations you noticed.

  3. What I believed: Write what you assumed the moment meant.

  4. What I need now: Identify one appropriate next step, source of support, truth, boundary, or act of obedience.

There's no need to try and analyze your entire history. Bring this one reaction before God and slowly read Psalm 139:23–24. Ask Him to show you what is true and what your next faithful response should be.

File Drawers

This video uses the picture of “file drawers” to explain why a present situation may open older places of pain, fear, or rejection and produce a reaction larger than the moment itself. We discuss a practical framework for recognizing those patterns without shame and bringing them into truth, safe connection, and heart change.
