Why Am I Still Not There Yet?
Daily Devotional — Monday, October 26, 2026

“But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord.” — 2 Corinthians 3:18, NKJV
Heart Change Insight
Sometimes growth becomes easier to see in reverse.
We look back and realize we really do respond differently than we once did. Something that used to control us no longer has the same power. We have learned to receive from God, make different heart choices, and recognize things in ourselves that we could not see before.
Then another situation comes along and exposes an area that still feels surprisingly immature. Suddenly we wonder, After everything God has done in me, why am I still struggling with this? Why am I not farther along by now?
That question can quietly turn spiritual growth into a performance review.
Why Am I Still Not There Yet?
Think about the canopy over a baby carrier. It provides covering and protection while the child is still growing. The baby doesn't have to become an adult before being cared for, but neither is the baby meant to remain an infant forever.
That is an important picture of grace.
God's grace gives us room to grow without requiring us to pretend we have already arrived. We can genuinely be connected with God while there are still parts of our character that need maturity. As we grow in knowledge, experience, and spiritual maturity, we also become responsible to walk in what God has already shown us.
That means unfinished growth is not automatically evidence that God is absent.
Sometimes we expect heart change to happen all at once. We recognize a wound, receive healing, and assume every response connected with that wound should immediately become mature. But healing and maturity are not always the same process. Healing may remove something that was interfering with growth, while leaving us with an area of life that still needs to develop.
That can be encouraging if we let it.
Instead of asking only, Why am I still not there?, we can begin asking, What is God developing in me now?
Grace Gives Us Room to Grow
Growth happens one baseline at a time.
Maybe God has already established honesty where there used to be hiding. Now He is developing faithfulness. Maybe we have learned how to receive correction without shutting down, but we are still learning patience. Maybe fear no longer controls every decision, but we are still learning how to remain peaceful when circumstances are uncertain.
We do not have to despise the unfinished places. We also do not use grace as permission to leave them unfinished forever.
Heart change comes through consistent heart choice. Grace does not remove our participation. It gives us a place from which we can keep responding to God instead of trying to earn His acceptance through better performance.
So perhaps the better question today is not, Why am I not finished yet?
Maybe it is:
What is the next thing God is asking me to receive, practice, and grow into?
We can thank God for the growth that is already real, remain honest about what is still immature, and take the next heart choice He puts in front of us. We are being transformed, and that means the work is real even while it is still happening.
Reflection
Where can you look back and clearly see that God has changed you?
Where are you tempted to dismiss that growth because something still feels unfinished?
What might be the next area God is asking you to receive from Him, practice, and grow into?
Prayer
Father, thank You for the growth You have already produced in me. Help me recognize Your work without pretending that I have arrived. Keep me from turning spiritual growth into a performance test or using grace as an excuse to stay immature. Show me what You are developing next, and teach me to receive from You and cooperate with that work. Help me keep moving from glory to glory as You form the life of Christ in me. In Jesus' name, amen.
Today's Step of Obedience
Take a few minutes today and name one area where real growth has already happened.
Then identify one unfinished area without condemning yourself for it.
Ask God:
“What are You asking me to receive, practice, and grow into next?”
Choose one heart response today that agrees with what He shows you.
