Daily Devotional: A Lifestyle of Willing to Do His Will

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine…” (John 7:17, NKJV)

Heart change is not a single heroic moment. It is a lifestyle. Only those who consistently choose to put God on the throne over an extended period get heart change. That can frustrate us because we want change to be instant. God often changes us through repetition: choice after choice, day after day.

John says that if anyone wills to do His will, he shall know. Willingness opens knowledge. Obedience opens sight. Pride blinds. Humility clarifies. A selfish person often does not even recognize selfishness until the outcomes are too painful to deny. A person who allows God to rule sees more selfishness each day because light reveals what darkness hid.

This is not meant to crush me. It is meant to invite me. There is always more of the heart to give to God. There is always more selfishness to conquer. The depths of life in God are inexhaustible. Growth is not shame. Growth is invitation.

Words and actions matter. Spirit matters. Humility matters. Connections matter. Godly authority can become a covering and a source of strength. Godly influencers help me see when I am operating in human strength. They encourage humility and the life of God. Learning to draw strength from God and from wise people is part of ruling over self.

So today I renew the main choice: who is on the throne of my heart? Self or God? Pride or humility? If I choose God today, I will see more of Him and taste more of His goodness. If I refuse, darkness grows and cynicism becomes normal.

Breaking through is the result of many small obediences stacked together. That is the lifestyle. Willing to do His will is the path of life.

Reflection Question

Where have I been living on autopilot, letting triggers choose for me instead of choosing God?

Prayer

Father, I choose Your will today. Put Your throne in the center of my heart and expose what needs to change without crushing me. Teach me to live in humility, speak truth, act in obedience, and keep choosing You as a lifestyle. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Pick one daily “throne check” moment (lunch break or bedtime). Ask: “Who ruled my heart today?” Confess where self ruled, thank God for where He helped, and choose one specific adjustment for tomorrow.
