“If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” (Luke 9:23, NKJV)
Jesus spoke plainly about what it means to follow Him: deny self, take up your cross daily, and follow. That is not a one-time commitment. It is daily, even minute by minute. The cross is not mainly a symbol of suffering. It is a symbol of death to self-rule. It is the steady choice to put God’s will above selfish gain.
The phrase “deny himself” is not popular. Many have turned God into a Santa Claus type of god, where we come with requests for blessing and assume minimal response is required. We may believe “nice” behavior should be rewarded more than “naughty” behavior, yet death to self is not something the selfish part wants to hear.
Still, Jesus’ words remain. If I try to hang on to my life, I lose it. If I give up my life for His sake, I save it. That is not a threat. It is a spiritual law. The selfish man clings and shrinks. The surrendered man releases and grows.
Jesus Himself lived this. He chose against selfish benefit. He chose for God and for others. Then, because He did not choose selfishness, He was rewarded with the highest place of authority. By becoming the servant of all, He became King of all. This pattern is the opposite of worldly thinking. The world seeks authority through self-promotion. The Kingdom grants authority through humility and obedience.
This does not mean I become passive. It means I become submitted. It means I choose godly character over temporal satisfaction. It means I believe God is rewarding, even when the reward is delayed. That requires faith. The selfish man wants what he wants now. Faith looks beyond short-term discomfort and trusts God’s long-term outcomes.
So today I practice daily denial, not as misery, but as a pathway to life. I deny the impulse that wants immediate gratification. I deny the urge that wants to win at all costs. I deny the pride that wants to be right. I deny the fear that wants to control. Then I follow Jesus.
In the end, actions win. Daily choices shape the heart. Denial becomes freedom.
Reflection Question
What is one selfish impulse I most often excuse instead of denying?
Prayer
Father, teach me to deny self daily and to follow Jesus with a willing heart. Strengthen my faith to trust Your rewards even when they are delayed. Form godly character in me through consistent choice. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Obedience Step for Today
Choose one “cross moment” you can practice today: a place where you will yield, serve, forgive, or obey when self wants the opposite. Act on it quickly when the moment arrives.
