Daily Devotional: Abide Means Remain

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.” (John 15:4, NKJV)

In the New Testament, one of the closest concepts to trust is the word abide. Jesus says, “Abide in Me, and I in you.” Some translations use the word remain. Both words give us a picture of staying connected. Trust is not only a belief. Trust is where I remain.

Psalm 91 speaks of fleeing to God as a place of refuge. John 15 speaks of remaining in Christ as the source of life. These pictures belong together. I flee to Him, and then I stay. I do not merely visit when I am afraid. I do not merely pray when life is out of control. I make Him my dwelling place. I remain in His Word. I remain in His presence. I remain under His lordship.

The only problem is that even when I intend to obey, the law of sin and death still pulls at me. I may not overcome a sin area immediately. Old reactions may still rise. Old habits may still call. Old fears may still argue. In those moments, many people start making excuses. They explain why obedience is too hard, why their situation is unique, why God understands, why they cannot really be expected to change.

Jesus gives a different command: remain. If I choose to remain in Him, I will develop the strength I need to overcome. The strength may not appear all at once. Fruit does not appear the same day a branch is connected. Fruit grows because the branch stays connected to the vine over time.

This is why spiritual maturity cannot be reduced to instant victory. God does deliver instantly at times, but much of heart change happens through abiding. I stay connected when I fail. I stay connected when I am ashamed. I stay connected when I do not feel strong. I stay connected when obedience feels uncomfortable. The life of Christ flows through continued connection.

Over time, outcomes change. The fruit of anger can pass away. The fruit of hatefulness can be replaced by love. The fruit of fear can be replaced by peace. That does not happen because I tried harder in isolation. It happens because I remained in the source of life long enough for His life to reshape mine.

Every person abides somewhere. Some abide in anxiety. Some abide in resentment. Some abide in escape. Some abide in the approval of others. Some abide in control. Those places may feel familiar, but they cannot produce the fruit of Christ. Only Christ can produce Christ’s fruit.

So today I ask, “Where have I been remaining?” Not where have I visited, but where have I lived? If I want the fruit of Christ, I must remain in Christ. Abide is not complicated, but it is costly. It means I keep coming back to Him until His life becomes my life.

Reflection Question

Where have I been abiding lately: in Christ, in fear, in control, in escape, or in something else?

Prayer

Father, teach me to abide. Help me remain in Christ when I feel weak, ashamed, tempted, or afraid. Let Your life flow into the places where I have tried to change myself. Produce fruit in me that only You can produce. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Set aside 15 minutes today to practice abiding. Read John 15:1–8 slowly, sit quietly with God, and pray, “Jesus, I choose to remain in You.”
