Daily Devotional: Choosing Trust

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1, NKJV)

Access. Flee into. Dwell. Abide. Remain. These words all point to a central truth: every human being will connect somewhere. We may try to limit our connections. We may withdraw into self. We may tell ourselves we do not need anyone. Yet none of us are truly successful at becoming disconnected. We all end up abiding somewhere.

Some abide in self-trust. Some in money. Some in government. Some in a company. Some in power. Some in being connected to powerful people. Some in romance. Some in escape. Some in old pain. Some in religious performance. Only those who trust in God will flourish. Only those who connect deeply with God and with godly people will have what they need to overcome the law of sin and death.

This does not mean life becomes easy. It means the source changes. If I abide in fear, fear becomes my strength, and that strength will eventually become bondage. If I abide in control, control becomes my refuge, and that refuge will eventually become a prison. If I abide in Christ, His life begins to flow into me. His strength becomes available. His fruit begins to grow.

The key question is simple: who or what do I trust? The honest answer is found in where I go, what I obey, and who I allow to shape me. If I say I trust God but follow my own heart, I am trusting self. If I say I trust godly people but reject their counsel whenever it confronts me, I am trusting self. If I say I want freedom but keep abiding in old connections, I am trusting death-producing sources.

The good news is that I can choose differently. Through Christ, I have access. I can run into God as refuge. I can remain in Jesus as the true vine. I can connect with people who know Him and overflow with His goodness. I can learn a new way to live.

This is not about perfection. It is about direction. I may run to the wrong place at first and then turn back. I may fail and then press into Christ again. I may struggle to trust healthy people because my past taught me otherwise. Yet if I keep choosing life, my future begins to change.

When trouble comes, where do I go? That is where I will live. Today I choose my dwelling place. I choose Christ. I choose His Word. I choose His people. I choose the refuge that produces life.

Reflection Question

Where am I currently abiding, and what future is that place producing in me?

Prayer

Father, I choose You as my refuge. Teach me to abide in Christ and to draw strength from godly relationships. Deliver me from every false refuge that feels familiar but leads to death. Let my future be shaped by life-giving connection with You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Create an “abide plan” for the next seven days. Choose one daily practice that connects you with God and one relational step that connects you with a godly person. Follow through each day.
