Daily Devotional: Coachable People Build a Blessable Life

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“Let the righteous strike me; It shall be a kindness, and let him rebuke me; It shall be as excellent oil.” (Psalm 141:5a, NKJV)

The sports world understands something the church often forgets: if you want to win, you must be coachable. Athletes accept painful instruction because the goal is improvement. Rebuke becomes coaching. Correction becomes training. Even intense words can be received as a gift if the athlete trusts the purpose: “I want to get better.”

The Christian life is not less serious than a sport. Either actions have outcomes or they do not. Either sowing and reaping is real or it is not. Yet many believers treat correction as optional because they lack motivation. They do not see the “game” they are in. Scripture says the stakes are enormous. Lives are impacted by our choices. Families are shaped. Communities are affected. Eternal outcomes are real.

If I want heart change, I need people in my life who can coach me. Not people who flatter me. Not people who confirm my excuses. People who love me enough to tell the truth. People who can see patterns. People who can speak Scripture into my blind spots. That kind of relationship is rare, and it is priceless.

Coachable people become blessable because they avoid unnecessary consequences. They learn from others instead of learning only from pain. They adjust early instead of crashing later. They build a life where God’s instruction is welcomed. Over time, the law of sowing and reaping brings good and perfect gifts, not because the person earned them, but because he aligned with God’s ways.

Reflection Question

Do I have someone who can speak hard truth to me without fear of my reaction?

Prayer

Father, make me coachable. Give me a heart that wants to get better for Your glory and for the good of others. Bring wise people into my life who can speak truth, and help me receive their correction as kindness. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Identify one “coach” relationship you already have or need. This week, invite clarity by asking: “What is one area where you think I need to grow right now?”
