Daily Devotional: Love in Work Boots

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“Turn at my rebuke; Surely I will pour out my spirit on you; I will make my words known to you.” (Proverbs 1:23, NKJV)

We will all fail, but we will not all fail forward. Failure is common to every human being. The dividing line in spiritual maturity is not whether I fail, but what I do when correction comes. Many people want a Christianity that requires no discomfort. They want acceptance without confrontation, blessing without change, and mercy without repentance. Scripture does not describe that kind of faith as love. It describes it as foolishness.

Proverbs 1 is shocking to modern ears because it confronts how lightly we take wisdom. God speaks of people who love their simple ways, who delight in mockery, and who hate knowledge. Then He identifies the “package” that knowledge often comes in: rebuke. Correction. Instruction that confronts what is wrong. Our culture tends to treat rebuke as harmful and judgmental, as if any strong challenge is automatically belittling. Scripture treats rebuke as a doorway into life.

That does not mean all correction is delivered well. Human ego can make correction ugly. People can give advice to feel superior, establish control, or vent irritation. Because of ego, correction rarely arrives wrapped in comfort. Yet the discomfort does not automatically make it wrong. Many people reject wisdom simply because it stings. They treat any sharp word as condemnation, then they miss the life inside the correction.

Here is the principle Proverbs is pressing: actions have outcomes. Spiritual law means that foolishness creates pain. Not only for the fool, but for others. A drunkard cannot be treated the same way as a sober man, not because God is harsh, but because reality is real. A fool with no correction will crush his own life and the lives of those around him. If God is loving, He cannot sit idle while destruction multiplies.

This is why receiving correction is such a big deal. It is a humility test. It reveals who is on the throne. If self is on the throne, correction feels like an attack. The self-life wants the right to do what it wants and still get good outcomes. That world does not exist. It only exists in the mind of the fool. If God is on the throne, correction becomes a gift, even when it hurts.

David is one of the clearest examples. He committed adultery and orchestrated murder. Yet he is called a man after God’s heart. Why? Not because sin was small, but because when confronted he took responsibility and changed course. He did not defend himself. He did not attack the messenger. He received correction and turned.

So today I ask: do I want to get better? If my goal is growth, I become coachable. If my goal is protecting ego, I become defensive. God loves me too much to leave me uncoachable. Many of His gifts arrive as instruction first. Correction is love in work boots. It steps into the mess because it wants life to win.

Reflection Question

When correction comes, do I treat it as love or as an attack?

Prayer

Father, give me a teachable heart. Deliver me from defensiveness and from the pride that hates correction. Help me receive Your instruction as love, even when it stings. Make me quick to repent and eager to grow. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Think of one correction you have resisted recently. Write down the “life” it was aiming at. Then take one small action today that shows you are turning in that direction.
