Daily Devotional: Divine Partnership & Intervention

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“So I sought for a man among them who would make a wall, and stand in the gap before Me… but I found no one.” (Ezekiel 22:30, NKJV)

It sounds reasonable to say, “If God can speak the universe into existence, He can fix anything instantly.” In one sense, that is true. God’s voice reigns. Yet Scripture also reveals a partnership that shapes how God moves on the earth. God handed authority on the earth to human beings. Humanity handed that authority to Satan through sin. Jesus bought that authority back through the cross. Then Jesus handed authority to the church. That means God often works through human initiative, prayer, and obedience.

This partnership helps explain why some prayers are not answered the way we want. Ezekiel 22 gives a sobering picture. God declares He is looking for a man to stand in the gap, to stand between the nation and impending judgment. The implication is clear: God did not want to judge the land. God was about to allow something He did not desire. He searched for a partner so the destructive power of sin would not run its course.

When no one stood, judgment came. That was not because God lost power. It was because spiritual law prevailed. Sin has outcomes. Someone pays. When evil is unchecked, it escalates. Vile hearts do not stop themselves. They either encounter a force that breaks into their world and brings change, or they continue into destruction until society collapses.

This is where modern assumptions often fail. Many assume God simply overrides free will whenever pain is severe. Scripture shows that God honors the authority structure He established. He works through people. He looks for partners. He responds to prayer, intercession, and obedience that give Him the right to intervene in a way that remains righteous.

This does not minimize God’s compassion. It clarifies it. God’s desire is to rescue. God’s desire is to save. God’s desire is to deliver. God’s orderliness means outcomes still matter. God is not a magician performing for an audience. God is a King establishing righteousness in a world that resists it. That resistance can tie up outcomes in ways that require time, layers, and persistent spiritual authority.

So what do we do? We embrace the role God gave us. We become the kind of people who stand. We become the kind of people who pray, obey, repent, and sacrifice in ways that open the door for God’s intervention. We stop treating prayer as a last resort and start treating prayer as partnership.

Some miracles happen without any obvious human initiative, yet most of the time God moves through the prayers and actions of His people. That should not make us proud. It should make us sober. It should also make us hopeful. If God is looking for partners, then I can choose to be one.

Reflection Question

Where might God be inviting me to become part of the answer instead of only asking for an answer?

Prayer

Father, make me a person who stands in the gap. Forgive me for passivity and for expecting outcomes without partnership. Teach me to pray and obey in a way that gives You room to intervene according to Your righteousness. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Choose one person or situation you will “stand for” this week. Pray for them daily, and take one supportive action that aligns with your prayer (a call, an apology, an act of service, or seeking wise counsel).
