Daily Devotional: Stay Through the Delay

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“Men always ought to pray and not lose heart.” (Luke 18:1, NKJV)

The most difficult faith is exercised when there is a delay in the answer. Quick answers can feel like proof. Delayed answers require trust. Delayed answers also reveal what is in the heart. Many people start well and quit later. They pray for a while, obey for a while, hope for a while, then become disillusioned and stop.

The picture of the golden bowl (Revelation 5 & 8) is a remedy for that drift. God stores up prayers. God accumulates authority. God waits for timing that fulfills righteousness completely. God waits until there is no corner cut, no accusation left, no injustice unresolved. God’s “now” is not whim. God’s timing is when the accumulated prayers in th ebowl reach the tipping point.

This means perseverance is not wasted effort. Perseverance is part of spiritual authority. Each prayer adds weight. Each act of obedience adds weight. Each tear adds weight. Each humble response adds weight. Over time the weight becomes greater than the opposing force, and God acts in a way that shifts the battle.

This is where the sayings become anchors: all things work by spiritual authority, and the greater spiritual weight dominates. The greater force wins. The good news is that God ultimately is the greater force, and His nature is good. That allows a positive outlook even while waiting. Waiting is not hopeless when the One who is waiting with me is righteous and faithful.

So today I decide what kind of person I will be. Will I be the person who quits right before the bowl tips? Will I be the person who grows cynical because the answer was delayed? Will I be the person who interprets delay as neglect? Another option exists. I can be the person who keeps filling the bowl. I can be the person who keeps obeying in the hidden places. I can be the person who keeps praying when nothing seems to change. I can be the person who trusts God’s timing as part of God’s righteousness.

A lifestyle of faith is not dramatic. It is steady. It is humble. It is persistent. It is confident that God is working, even when the work is stored up rather than visible.

Reflection Question

What delay is testing my faith right now, and what is it producing in me: trust or cynicism?

Prayer

Father, keep me faithful in delay. Strengthen me to pray, obey, and trust until Your tipping point comes. Guard me from cynicism and discouragement. Teach me to live a life that fills the bowl and honors Your righteousness. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Choose one “persistent prayer” for this season. Set a daily reminder and pray it at the same time each day for the next 14 days. Write down any small changes you notice in your heart during that time.
