Daily Devotional: Is God Waiting on Me?

“You do not have because you do not ask.” (James 4:2, NKJV)
Many people think they are waiting on God, when the truth is that God is often waiting on us. God put man in charge of the earth in a meaningful way. God chose to work through people. God waits for people to give Him the authority to act on their behalf through prayer, obedience, repentance, and faith responses.
This can sound strange at first because it clashes with the common assumption that God simply overrides everything. Scripture points toward partnership. God is the greater force. God is sovereign. God also honors the authority structure He established. This means my choices matter. My prayers matter. My obedience matters. When those things are missing, chaos increases. When those things are present, blessing can flow.
This is why spiritual authority is not merely a concept. It is a way of life. A person who prays without obedience often becomes confused. A person who obeys without prayer often becomes exhausted. A person who wants spiritual outcomes without spiritual alignment often becomes disillusioned. The way forward is partnership.
God does not need my permission to be God. God does choose to work through human beings. This choice honors relationship. It gives dignity to human will. It also means I cannot live passively and expect consistent breakthrough. A lifestyle of faith includes both prayer and response. It includes both asking and obeying. It includes both worship and action.
This is where self-pity has to die. Self-pity says, “Life is happening to me and I can do nothing.” Faith says, “God has given me a role.” Faith searches out spiritual law and cooperates. Faith rejects victim mentality because victim mentality refuses responsibility. Responsibility is not blame. Responsibility is dignity. God gave me agency to cooperate with Him.
Today I ask a direct question: what authority is God waiting for me to release? What prayer has been delayed because I stopped asking? What obedience has been delayed because I kept negotiating? What repentance has been delayed because I kept defending self? The tipping point often comes after the last needed step is taken, not because God was unwilling, but because God’s order was being honored.
Reflection Question
What “next step” of prayer or obedience have I been delaying?
Prayer
Father, show me where You have been waiting on me. Forgive my passivity and my blaming. Teach me partnership through prayer and obedience. Give me grace to take the next step that releases Your authority in my life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Obedience Step for Today
Choose one specific next step today: pray, repent, ask forgiveness, take a righteous action, seek counsel, or make a needed decision. Do it within 24 hours as an act of partnership.
