Daily Devotional: God is Not Random

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent.” (Numbers 23:19, NKJV)

Most people have been taught to think of God as all-powerful in a way that sounds like, “He can do whatever He wants whenever He wants.” That idea can feel comforting at first, yet it often produces confusion later. When life hurts, people start trying to interpret pain as if God simply chose it on a whim. Some even talk about God “taking” a person or “letting” a person live, as if heaven is a playground and God is improvising moment by moment.

Scripture gives a more stable picture. God is sovereign and wise, yet He is also righteous and faithful. God cannot lie. God will not violate His character. God will not do anything that contradicts any word He has ever spoken. He is completely faithful to His promises. That means God’s power is never separated from God’s nature. His authority is always expressed in righteousness.

This is why mercy matters so much, and also why mercy is often misunderstood. Mercy is not cheap, and it is not arbitrary. Righteousness demands that if mercy is extended, someone must pay the price for that mercy. The cross teaches this with clarity. Redemption required the suffering and death of Jesus. Mercy cost God deeply. That cost does not make God less loving. It reveals the depth of His love and the integrity of His justice.

This perspective changes how I handle delay and pain. It helps me stop treating God as unpredictable. It helps me stop interpreting hardship as proof that God is careless. It helps me see that God is working within His own holy order. God is not only powerful. God is faithful. God is not only able. God is just. God is not only compassionate. God is consistent.

This also calls me into maturity. If God operates by spiritual authority and holy order, then my responses matter. Choices matter. Obedience matters. Prayer matters. Faith matters. The Christian life is not passive waiting for God to randomly intervene. It is cooperation with the God who is always faithful to His Word.

A steady heart begins here: God is not random. God is not whimsical. God is not manipulating. God is righteous, consistent, and good. That foundation strengthens faith because it gives me something solid to trust when I cannot see what He is doing.

Reflection Question

Where have I interpreted God’s delay or silence as randomness instead of righteousness and faithfulness?

Prayer

Father, forgive me for thinking of You as unpredictable or random. Teach me to trust Your character and Your righteousness. Anchor my faith in the truth that You are faithful to Your Word and consistent in Your ways. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Write one painful situation you have struggled to understand. Under it, write: “God cannot lie. God is faithful. God is righteous.” Read that statement aloud and ask God to stabilize your perspective.
