Life Sayings:
I can only draw strength from what I trust.
If I trust only myself, my future will look just like my past, only worse.
"However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth..."— John 16:13a
"And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."— John 8:32
As a high school debater, I learned how to argue both sides of the same topic. Logic could be twisted, passion could be manipulated, and the same words could be used to defend totally opposite conclusions. That experience taught me something I never forgot: logic alone won’t lead to truth. Passion doesn’t make something real. What seems reasonable to me is usually shaped by what has been normal in my life.
I’ve watched how many people either cling to the beliefs of their upbringing or rebel entirely against them, swinging to the opposite extreme. Yet in both cases, the focus is still on what’s familiar. Unless I allow God to guide my heart through obedience, I’ll stay stuck in what seems right to me. That’s why obedience often comes before understanding.
The Holy Spirit was given to us as a teacher. He leads us into truth—both directly, through the whisper of conviction in our hearts, and indirectly, through the words of others and the pages of Scripture. The Bible isn’t a collection of man-made ideas. According to 2 Peter 1:21, the words were written by people who were moved by the Spirit of God. And over generations, those words were judged, tested, and confirmed to be from Him.
That’s why Scripture becomes our standard. We must measure every impression, feeling, or “word” we think we hear from God against what He’s already revealed. If the Bible says something clearly, the Spirit will never contradict it. He sees the whole picture. We don’t.
God’s Word is not a dead document—it’s a living conversation. It gives us solid ground in a world full of shifting ideas. The more I know God, the more I can recognize His voice. The more I meditate on truth, the less likely I am to be fooled by something that only feels true.
Reflection Question
What voices, feelings, or “normals” in your life have shaped how you decide what’s true?
Prayer
God, I confess that I often trust my own logic and lean on what feels familiar. I want to be led by Your Spirit and shaped by Your Word. Please open my eyes to truth. Teach me to listen for Your voice, even when it challenges my old ways of thinking. Help me obey You before I fully understand, knowing that You are good and trustworthy. Amen.
Today’s Step of Obedience
Set aside ten minutes to read a chapter of Scripture. Ask the Holy Spirit to teach you something new and write down one truth He highlights.
