“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33, NKJV)
God wants so much more for us than the short-term pleasure our culture promotes as the ultimate good. His love sees life on a greater scale. He sees generations. He sees covenant. He sees children and grandchildren. He sees the fruit of discipline, faithfulness, and love over time. He sees the destruction that comes when people chase pleasure while ignoring the greater good.
The world tells us that pleasure is the path to happiness. God tells us that righteousness is the path to life. When we chase pleasure, we often get destruction. When we seek God’s kingdom and righteousness, we receive what we were trying to get through shortcuts, but in a form that can actually last.
This applies to sexuality, relationships, marriage, family, and every area of life. True love submits every area to the greater good. It asks, “What does God want here?” “What will produce life?” “What will protect trust?” “What will bless future generations?” “What will help the whole, not just satisfy the moment?”
That kind of love requires discipline. It requires saying no to momentary pulls that would destroy long-term relationship. It requires building character before demanding intimacy. It requires guarding the heart and thought life. It requires refusing casual attitudes toward what God designed to be holy and powerful. It requires choosing God’s order, even when culture calls it outdated or unnecessary.
The promise is not that obedience will be easy. The promise is that God’s way leads to life. A person who builds a healthy heart, healthy friendships, and healthy spiritual foundations has a much greater chance of building a healthy marriage and family. A person who learns self-control can offer love without using others. A person who submits sexuality to God can experience intimacy as part of covenant, not as a substitute for it.
Even for those who have not followed God in this area, it is never too late to start. That matters deeply. Shame says, “You have already ruined it.” God says, “Come walk with Me now.” The process may take time. There may be healing to do, patterns to break, confessions to make, boundaries to build, and trust to restore. Still, heart change is possible. God restores lives to where He wants them to be.
What I consistently care about is who I am. If I consistently care about pleasure, I am becoming a person driven by appetite. If I consistently care about the greater good, I am becoming a person shaped by love. God comes to those who make room for Him. When I make room by surrendering desire, He fills that room with grace, wisdom, and life.
When we do life God’s way, we all win in the long run. We receive deeper intimacy, stronger relationships, healthier families, and joy that lasts beyond the moment. True love is to submit every area of life to the greater good for all. That is the path of life.
Reflection Question
Is my life mostly a pursuit of pleasure, or am I building spiritual and relational intimacy God’s way?
Prayer
Father, help me seek first Your kingdom and righteousness. Teach me to submit every area of my life to Your design. Heal what has been broken, strengthen what is weak, and lead me into love that serves the greater good. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Obedience Step for Today
Create a “greater good” commitment statement for one area of your life. Begin with: “Because I want God’s best for my future and for those connected to me, I will…”
