Daily Devotional: Love with the Greater Good in Mind

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“But did He not make them one, having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring.” (Malachi 2:15, NKJV)

True intimacy requires that we learn to get selfish desires under control. That is not a popular idea in a culture that equates love with pleasure. We are told that whatever pleases a person is love. If the feeling is strong, it must be right. If desire is present, it should be followed. If a relationship no longer produces the pleasure a person wants, the relationship is treated as disposable.

Malachi 2 gives a very different picture. God speaks about marriage and says the two are made one. Then He asks, “Why one?” His answer is clear: “He seeks godly offspring.” In other words, marriage is not merely about the immediate pleasure of two adults. It is connected to the greater good. It is connected to children. It is connected to generations. It is connected to the purposes of God in the earth.

In that passage, God confronts men who were taking marriage lightly. They were dealing treacherously with the wives of their youth. They were discarding covenant, presumably in pursuit of something more pleasing to self. God was not pleased because their choices were not private. Their selfishness damaged wives, children, families, and generations.

Love keeps the greater good in mind. Love does not ask only, “What do I want right now?” Love asks, “What is best for the people affected by my choices?” Love asks, “What will this produce in five years? In ten years? In the children who are watching? In the family that will be shaped by this decision?”

This does not mean a person should remain in danger or tolerate abuse under the label of love. God does not bless destruction. It does mean that the ordinary selfishness of “I want what I want” must bow to something higher. Love is not merely emotion. Love is a commitment to the good of another and to the purposes of God.

The husband and wife who do the work needed to raise a godly family may sacrifice many short-term pleasures. They may have hard conversations, choose forgiveness, discipline their impulses, practice patience, and keep showing up when feelings are not dramatic. Yet over time, that kind of love produces satisfaction that momentary pleasure cannot give. Later years can be full of peace and reward because the foundation was built with God in mind.

What I consistently care about is who I am. If I consistently care about my own pleasure, my relationships will eventually become tools for self. If I consistently care about the greater good, my relationships become places where love can mature.

God’s way does not rob us of joy. God’s way protects joy by placing it inside covenant, faithfulness, and purpose. True love is not the worship of desire. True love submits desire to the greater good.

Reflection Question

Where do I tend to define love by what pleases me rather than by what produces life for others?

Prayer

Father, teach me to love with the greater good in mind. Forgive me for treating relationships as places to get what I want instead of places to serve Your purpose. Build covenant faithfulness, restraint, and long-term love in me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Think about one key relationship. Write down one choice you can make this week that serves the long-term good of that person or family, even if it requires sacrifice.
