“He fashions their hearts individually; He considers all their works.” - Psalm 33:15 (NKJV)
God allows us to participate in our own creation. That is both sobering and hopeful. It means my choices matter in a way I cannot ignore. It also means my future is not locked. A heart can be reshaped because choices can change.
Psalm 33 describes God looking from heaven, seeing all the sons of men, and fashioning their hearts individually. He considers their works. That is not a picture of God forcing people into a mold. It is a picture of God responding to what is coming out of the heart. He shapes. He forms. He draws. Some cooperate. Some refuse. Some give Him something to work with. Some do not.
This fits the picture of the potter in Jeremiah. The clay is on the wheel. Pressure is applied. The clay is formed. Life is that wheel. My choices are part of the clay’s response. A pot becomes something firm through repeated shaping and, eventually, fire. The fire is not punishment. The fire is what hardens the vessel into usefulness. The person who consistently chooses God during seasons of testing becomes someone who will not turn away later. Revelation describes such people as those over whom the second death has no power. Their hearts have been formed.
This gives meaning to the daily grind of obedience. Small choices are not small. They are shaping. Every time I submit to God instead of self, I am giving the Potter material. Every time I resist, I harden in the opposite direction.
This also explains why the perverse would not enjoy heaven. Heaven is not primarily a location. It is life with God. Those who refuse His image are refusing the only atmosphere where heaven makes sense. Even if placed near the throne, a selfish heart would feel tormented, because everything there is love, worship, and shared joy in God. So God allows people to choose. He allows them to participate in forming who they become. Then He gives a destiny that fits that formation.
This is not harshness. It is order. Selfishness has consequences just as gravity does. God Himself submitted to His own moral order. He paid for sin through the cross so that forgiveness could be lawful. The orderly part of His nature demanded a payment if He were to forgive.
So today I remember this: I am becoming something. My choices are shaping me. God is not distant from the process. He is actively shaping the hearts of those who will cooperate. Heart change comes through heart choice.
Reflection Question
What kind of person am I becoming through the choices I have been making recently?
Prayer
Father, I want to cooperate with Your shaping work. Help me see my choices as part of my formation. Give me grace to choose You consistently, especially when my flesh resists. Form in me a heart that delights in You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Obedience Step for Today
At the end of today, write down three choices you made. Ask: “Did this choice shape me toward God or toward self?” Then choose one different response you will practice tomorrow.
