“For precept must be upon precept, precept upon precept, line upon line, line upon line, here a little, there a little.” (Isaiah 28:10, NKJV)
The heart is built one line upon the next. Scripture describes growth as “precept upon precept… line upon line… here a little, there a little.” That picture is both comforting and confronting. It is comforting because it tells me God is not rushing me. He is building something. It is confronting because it means maturity will not come through shortcuts. Maturity requires step-by-step development.
Those who write computer code understand this. A system is built with meticulous detail. One small error can produce disastrous results. The human heart is like that. There is an immense amount of “code” written into us. If left alone, that code will produce outcomes, sometimes outcomes very different than what the mind would choose if it could step back and decide rationally. Paul described this conflict when he said he often did what he did not want to do. The heart has layers, habits, and reflexes that run deeper than intention.
God wants the whole heart. Any part of my heart that does not belong to Him becomes a potential target for the enemy. That does not mean God waits for me to become perfect before He uses me. It does mean He will often allow hidden areas to be triggered so I can see them. When an old reaction flares up, it is easy to feel discouraged. Yet it may be that God is giving me a chance to rewrite something. The trigger reveals an error in the code. Then transformation becomes possible.
This is why one of the life sayings is so practical: “If it don’t show up, I won’t grow up.” Growth requires exposure. What is hidden cannot be healed. What never surfaces cannot be corrected. God is not trying to shame me by letting weakness show. He is trying to mature me by bringing it into the light.
Another saying steadies me: “It’s not about perfection but direction. Fail forward.” Direction matters because the heart is built over time. If I keep turning toward God, even after failure, I am still moving in the right direction. Failure does not have to be the end. It can be information. It can show me what still needs attention. It can teach me to depend more deeply on grace.
This is the posture that makes daily discipleship possible. I stop thinking of myself as a fixed person who either “has it” or “doesn’t.” I start thinking like Scripture: the heart is being formed. The potter is working. The layers are being built. God is writing new lines into me. He is replacing old reflexes with new responses, old instincts with new loves.
So today I take the long view. I do not panic when something shows up. I do not pretend it is not there. I bring it to God. I ask Him what layer He is working on. Then I take the next small step in obedience. Line upon line is how maturity is formed.
Reflection Question
What “keeps showing up” in my life that God may be exposing so I can grow up?
Prayer
Father, thank You that You build the heart line upon line. Help me not despise slow growth. When weaknesses show up, give me humility to learn and courage to keep turning toward You. Write Your truth into my heart and mature me step by step. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Obedience Step for Today
Write down one repeating trigger or reaction you have had lately. Ask God: “What is the deeper line beneath this?” Then take one small corrective step today (apology, boundary, prayer, Scripture, accountability).
