Daily Devotional: Meeting People Where They Are

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“And on some have compassion, making a distinction.” (Jude 22, NKJV)

Every person needs to be met at the level where he is and challenged to take the next step. That sounds simple, but it requires wisdom. It is much easier to create one standard, one method, one response, and one consequence for everyone. It feels clean. It feels fair. It feels manageable. But people are not all in the same place.

In recovery, ministry, parenting, leadership, and discipleship, we often deal with people whose maturity levels are very different. One person may be functioning out of a three-year-old heart. Another may be acting like a five-year-old. Another may have made enough progress to be challenged at a much higher level. To treat radically different levels of maturity exactly the same can actually be foolish.

That does not mean fairness can be ignored. There must be a basic set of rules that applies to everyone. There must be a consistent undergirding philosophy that explains why there may be differences in application. Without that, variation feels like favoritism, manipulation, or confusion.

The deeper question is, “What is God currently doing in this person’s life?” That question changes the way rules are applied. If a person is at a place where he needs to receive love, the response may look very different than it would for someone hardening themself in rebellion. If a person is new and still deciding whether those in authority can be trusted, they may need more room. If a person has been around long enough to know the expectations and still refuses to engage, the challenge may need to become stronger.

God does this. In Scripture, there are times when He multiplies mercy, and there are times when He multiplies judgment. He is always working toward redemption, but He does not respond to every heart condition in the same way. He sees the heart. He knows what is needed. He is not confused by the appearance of fairness that ignores truth.

Healthy authority tries to respond to what God is doing. It does not challenge everyone in the exact same way. It challenges the part of the heart that is being held back from God. That requires prayer, discernment, conversation, and clear explanation.

People can usually handle variation better when the reason is explained. They need to know there is a guiding philosophy, not random preference. They need to see consistency beneath the flexibility. They need to believe the goal is growth, not control.

God wants my whole heart. He wants every person’s whole heart. Rules done to redeem will always be looking beneath the behavior to the heart God is addressing. The goal is not sameness. The goal is faithfulness to what God is doing in each person.

Reflection Question

Do I expect everyone to be treated exactly the same, or am I willing to consider what God may be doing differently in each person?

Prayer

Father, give me wisdom to meet people where they are without lowering Your call to growth. Help me recognize what You are doing in my life and in the lives of others. Teach me to be fair, clear, discerning, and loving in the way I handle expectations. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Think of someone you lead, parent, mentor, or walk with. Ask God, “What are You currently doing in this person’s life, and how can I cooperate with You?”
