“Where there is no revelation, the people cast off restraint; but happy is he who keeps the law.” (Proverbs 29:18, NKJV)
There has to be a line. Structure matters. Without structure, people cast off restraint. Families become chaotic. Ministries become confusing. Recovery environments become unsafe. Workplaces become frustrating. Relationships become unclear. Rules help establish what is acceptable, what is not acceptable, and how people can live together.
But structure is not the same as control. Control uses rules to dominate. Structure uses rules to create an environment where growth can happen. Control says, “You will do this because I have power over you.” Structure says, “This is the way we walk together so that life can grow here.”
That difference matters deeply. Dominating, dictatorial authority does not build trust. It may produce immediate outward results, but it often shuts down the very relationship needed for transformation. If a person only experiences rules as pressure, he may learn to perform, hide, manipulate, or rebel. He does not learn to receive.
Rules should lead us to the place of receiving, not performing. God wants us to know that we desperately need Him and cannot do His life without His strength.
Live by what is right, not by what feels right. What feels right may be to reject every line as control. What feels right may be to tighten every line in fear. God calls us to something better: structure with love, boundaries with purpose, and authority that helps people receive strength for real heart change.
Reflection Question
Where do I confuse structure with control, either in how I respond to rules or how I apply them to others?
Prayer
Father, teach me the difference between healthy structure and ungodly control. Help me receive boundaries that lead to life and reject the fear that turns rules into domination. Give me wisdom to create environments where people can grow, trust, and receive from You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Obedience Step for Today
Look at one rule or expectation you live under or enforce. Write down its purpose. If you cannot identify a redemptive purpose, pray and ask whether it needs clarification, adjustment, or better communication.
