Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” (Proverbs 18:10, NKJV)

If we could see authority from God’s point of view, we might be much more reluctant to chase positions of influence. Those positions require greater sacrifice, and Scripture tells us that those who teach and lead will face stricter judgment. Influence shapes people. It marks hearts. It can heal or wound. It can open people to God or make God harder for them to trust.

Godly authority should look like a strong tower. A person under that influence should be able to run toward it in time of trouble and find strength, protection, truth, and life. That does not mean the authority figure indulges every desire. Good parenting, leadership, and mentoring always look beyond the immediate emotional demand to the greater good. Sometimes love says no. Sometimes love confronts. Sometimes love disciplines. But even discipline should be rooted in life, not ego.

Parents can become unhealthy when they need the approval or success of the child. That need may cause them to cater to the child and create a spoiled child. That is not love. Love looks toward judgment day. Love asks, “What influence will produce better character? What will help this person become godly? What will matter eternally?”

On the other side, authority can become harsh and dominant, reducing people to servitude. That also fails. The goal is not to raise servants who only perform under pressure. The goal is to raise sons and daughters, kings under God, people who can receive strength and eventually walk in maturity.

We are all kings in some sense. A person under authority is not less human, less valuable, or less sovereign before God. For authority to be truly effective, it must win permission from the heart. It must become trustworthy enough that others willingly receive influence.

This is why integrity matters so much. Without integrity, there can be no real trust. If I want to be a protector and giver of life, I must live in a way that makes my influence safe. I must not use authority to satisfy my ego, cover my insecurity, or demand comfort. I must come under God’s authority first.

Doing authority God’s way is the place of true greatness. It covers. It nurtures. It protects. It gives strength. It releases others to become who God created them to be.

Reflection Question

Where has God called me to be a protector and giver of life, and how faithfully am I carrying that responsibility?

Prayer

Father, make me a protector and giver of life. Teach me to carry authority with humility, integrity, and eternal perspective. Keep me from using influence as privilege. Let those under my care find strength, safety, correction, and love through what You flow through me. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Obedience Step for Today

Write down the names of the people most affected by your influence. Pray over each one and ask God how to cover, nurture, protect, or release them more faithfully.
