Daily Devotional: Rules Reveal the Heart

“Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, and from sincere faith.” (1 Timothy 1:5, NKJV)
Some people might ask, “Why talk about rules in a devotional about heart change?” The answer is that rules often reveal what is happening in the heart. They reveal how we respond to authority, how we handle boundaries, how we treat others, and whether we believe we can live rightly without God.
Everything God commands comes from His character. His rules are not random. They are not given so He can control people in a harsh or selfish way. The purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and sincere faith. That means God’s rules are meant to lead us toward love. They show us what love looks like when applied to real life.
Without a standard, most of us do not recognize our need to grow. We tend to live by what feels right to us. We assume our instincts are trustworthy. We judge situations according to our past, our pain, our preferences, and our ego. Yet what feels right to us may not be right at all. A rule gives us a measuring stick. It creates a tension point. It helps us see where our heart is not yet aligned with God.
This is why the law is good when it is used lawfully. A righteous person hungers to do what is right. He is not trying to find the lowest possible standard he can meet. He wants the heart of God. For that kind of person, rules become a help, not a cage. They are practical expressions of God’s love and wisdom.
For the lawless person, rules function differently. They become a fence. They restrain the worst expressions of evil. They prevent one person’s selfishness from destroying everyone around him. A fence does not make someone good, but it can slow the damage. That is still mercy. A society with no boundaries is not loving. It is unsafe.
The deeper purpose of rules, however, is not merely restraint. God wants more than “not too evil.” He wants heart change. The rules show us where we fall short so we can see our need for Christ. They reveal that we cannot become who God created us to be by willpower alone.
Adults are often sophisticated three-year-olds. We may look more competent, but the “I can do it by myself” spirit still lives in us. Rules expose that independence. They remind us that we need God and we need one another. No one can get it right without the empowering work of the Holy Spirit.
God wants my whole heart. Rules are not the destination. Love is the destination. Rules are one of God’s tools to show me where I need Him, where I need growth, and where my heart still needs to become like His.
Reflection Question
Where have I viewed God’s rules as control instead of as love meant to lead me toward life?
Prayer
Father, help me see Your rules as an expression of Your love and character. Forgive me for resisting Your commandments or using rules to judge others. Let Your Word expose my need for You and lead me into a purer heart, a clearer conscience, and sincere faith. In Jesus’ name, amen.
