Daily Devotional: The Damage of Absence

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“A father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God in His holy habitation.” (Psalm 68:5, NKJV)

An authority figure who isolates himself can become one of the most damaging influences to those under his care. Absence speaks. It sends messages even when no words are used. It can say, “You are not worth my time.” It can say, “I do not care enough to interact with you.” It can leave those under authority wondering what is wrong with them. That question can echo for years.

This is why passivity is not neutral. An absent parent creates a vacuum. An absent leader creates confusion. An absent protector creates vulnerability. Even when a person does not actively dominate or abuse, his refusal to show up can still shape the spiritual atmosphere in painful ways.

God reveals Himself as Father of the fatherless and Defender of widows. That tells us something about His heart. He moves toward the vulnerable. He does not withdraw from those who need covering. He does not treat weakness as an inconvenience. He steps into the places where earthly authority has failed.

Those in authority are called to reflect that heart. The greatest thing an authority figure can do for someone under his care is to sow into them a sense of value. Presence says, “You matter enough for my time.” Consistency says, “You can count on me.” Attention says, “Your growth is worth my effort.” Protection says, “You are not alone.”

Without integrity, there can be no real trust. Integrity includes showing up. It includes doing what love requires even when the emotional reward is not immediate. It includes staying engaged when life is inconvenient. It includes not disappearing into work, entertainment, anger, passivity, or self-protection.

This does not mean an authority figure must be constantly available in an unhealthy way. Boundaries matter. Rest matters. But withdrawal that abandons responsibility is not godly rest. It is absence. The adult should act like an adult. He should cover, nurture, and protect.

God can heal the wounds left by absent authority. He can become Father in the places where parents failed. He can restore value where absence created shame. He can also teach us to show up differently for those who are now under our influence.

True authority is influence, and sometimes the first act of godly influence is simply to be present.

Reflection Question

How has the presence or absence of authority shaped my sense of value?

Prayer

Father, heal the places where absence has wounded me. Become my refuge and Defender where human authority failed. Teach me to show up faithfully for those You have placed under my care. Let my presence communicate value, love, and protection. In Jesus’ name, amen.
