Icy-blue image of open hands receiving soft light, representing the Heart Change principle that value cannot be achieved but must be received from God and through healthy connection.

Heart Change Insight

Sometimes an idea seems so obviously good that we hardly think to question it. Someone has a need, and we immediately see a way to help. An opportunity opens, and it seems practical, generous, and productive. We can explain why it makes sense, point to the good that could come from it, and perhaps even find a biblical principle that seems to support it.

None of that makes the idea wrong, but it also does not automatically make it God’s direction. That distinction matters because we are very good at reasoning our way toward what already seems right to us. The more convinced we become, the easier it is to move from This seems like a good idea to This must be what God wants.

Is This God's Idea or Mine?

Our minds are gifts from God. Reasoning, planning, experience, evidence, and wise judgment all matter. Following God does not require us to stop thinking.

The problem begins when we treat our conclusions as though they carry the same authority as God’s direction.

A good thought and a God thought can look very similar at first. We may sincerely want to help someone, solve a problem, protect something valuable, or accomplish something worthwhile. Yet our urgency, fear, values, assumptions, or desire for a particular outcome can quietly shape what seems obvious to us. Something that feels wise and even spiritual may still need to be examined for what is actually driving it.

That is one reason Scripture matters so much when we are learning to hear God.

When God has spoken clearly in His Word, we don't need to construct enough logic to make disobedience seem reasonable. We humble ourselves and obey. Our interpretation still requires care, context, and the counsel of the whole Word rather than grabbing a single verse that supports what we already want. But any direction we believe comes from God must be able to stand beside what He has already revealed.

Scripture is an essential standard in learning to hear God. Scripture does not replace the need for a living relationship with Him, but neither do our impressions get to overrule what God has already made clear.

Good Is Not the Same as God-Directed

Proverbs 3:5–6 tells us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and not lean on our own understanding. That doesn't mean "abandon understanding." It tells us not to make our understanding the thing we ultimately trust.

That can be difficult when our idea really is good.

Maybe we see someone struggling and believe we know exactly how to help. Helping may be consistent with biblical compassion. But does that mean we are supposed to step in this way, at this time, with this person? We may be right about the value and still be wrong about the assignment.

The same can happen with work, ministry, relationships, giving, or major decisions. Something may be morally permissible and genuinely worthwhile without being the particular thing God is asking of us right now.

That's where good thoughts and God thoughts need to be distinguished. Before we turn this makes sense into God told me, humility gives us room to ask, Is this God's idea or mine? Have I actually sought God’s direction, or have I decided what seems best and assumed He agrees?

That question does not have to make us afraid of ordinary decisions. We do not need a supernatural sign before choosing what to eat for lunch or handling normal responsibilities. God has given us wisdom, Scripture, relationships, experience, and the ability to make responsible choices.

But when we claim God’s direction, we should be willing to let Him challenge our reasoning. We can bring the idea to Scripture, remain open to correction, and ask whether we are truly partnering with God or simply asking Him to approve what we have already decided.

Humility leaves room for God to say, Yes. It also leaves room for Him to redirect us.

Hearing God’s voice is not about distrusting every good idea. It is about staying connected closely enough that even our best ideas remain surrendered to Him.

Reflection

Think about a decision or idea that currently seems clearly right to you.

What makes it seem good?

Does it agree with the clear teaching and God's character in Scripture?

Are you still willing for God to redirect the idea, the timing, or your part in it?

Prayer

Father, thank You for the ability to think, plan, reason, and make responsible choices. Keep me from confusing my own conclusions with Your direction simply because an idea seems good. Teach me to know Your Word, walk humbly, and remain open when You challenge what I have already decided. Help me recognize when urgency, fear, pride, or self-interest is shaping what seems right to me. I want to partner with You rather than ask You to bless a direction I chose without You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Today's Step of Obedience

Take one decision or idea you feel strongly about and ask:

Does this agree with what God has already made clear in Scripture?

What may be influencing why this feels so right to me?

Am I genuinely open to God changing my direction, timing, or role?

Don't manufacture doubt. Simply hold the idea before God with enough humility to be corrected.
