Icy-blue image of open hands receiving soft light, representing the Heart Change principle that value cannot be achieved but must be received from God and through healthy connection.

Heart Change Insight

People may know they can count on me. I show up, do what needs doing, and keep my commitments. From the outside, things look good. Yet I can finish a day like that and realize I barely stopped to receive anything from God. I was busy making it all work.

Sometimes I tell myself, “This is what I’m supposed to be doing. What could be wrong with it?” The work itself may be good. The question is whether I’m doing it with God or trying to produce the life He gives in my own strength.

When I’m Doing It in My Own Strength

In our ministry, we call that good flesh. I may be serving, helping, even saying the right things, but I’m leaning on my own effort to make it happen. The same action can look much the same from the outside whether it grows from communion with God or from my fear of letting someone down. When I’m in good flesh, the work becomes proof that I’m doing fine. It can hide how little I’ve been depending on Him.

This doesn’t make the good we did worthless. It helps us notice where the strength is coming from. Perhaps I learned to be the reliable one, and admitting I need help still feels uncomfortable. So I work a little harder. If the results don’t come, I work harder again. Sooner or later I’m tired or frustrated, even with people I love. The good activity has not settled what is happening in my heart.

You Don't Have to Make It All Work

In John 8:12, Jesus offers His light as a way into life. We can let Him show us where our effort has taken the place of connection with Him. I don’t have to stop caring or stop doing the work. I can say, “Lord, I’ve been trying to make this happen without You. I need Your life here.” Then I can slow down enough to listen and receive before I take the next step.

Maybe we need to hear this today: You don’t have to make it all work. We can stop trying to prove that we can and let God meet us in the work we’re already doing.

Reflection Question

Where am I doing something good while relying on my own effort to make it work? What would it look like to receive from God in that place?

Prayer

Father, thank You for the good work You give us to do. Show me where I have been doing it in my own strength while calling that faithfulness. Help me notice when I am trying to prove myself or force an outcome. Teach me to slow down, listen, and receive Your life as I serve. I want to work with You instead of leaving You out of the work. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Today's Step of Obedience

Before one good task today, pause and ask: “Am I trying to make this happen in my own strength?” Let the Holy Spirit show you honestly what is driving you. Spend a moment listening and receiving before you begin.
