When Did We Start Taking Control Back?

“He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.” — John 15:5, NKJV
Heart Change Insight
Sometimes we are more aware of our need for God when everything is falling apart. We pray differently. We listen more carefully. We ask for help. We slow down enough to receive because we know we cannot make it on our own.
Then something changes. We begin responding differently. A relationship gets healthier. We gain some peace. An old pattern loses some of its grip. We become steadier, wiser, and more capable. That progress is real, and we should be grateful for it.
Yet success creates a temptation that struggle often does not. Once we begin feeling stronger, we can quietly start believing we no longer need to receive in the same way.
When Did We Start Taking Control Back?
Life in the Spirit produces real fruit. When we are connected with God, receiving His life, and walking in obedience, we can become stronger and more stable. There can be joy, peace, wisdom, self-control, and genuine change. The danger is not the strength or the progress. The danger is forgetting where it came from.
Once we feel capable again, something in us wants to say, I’ve got this now. We may not consciously reject God. We simply stop depending on Him in the same way. Prayer becomes less necessary. Listening becomes less important. We rely on what we learned last time, repeat the method that worked before, and begin trying to reproduce through our own effort what God had been producing through connection.
That is how good flesh can quietly return. The actions may still look right. In fact, they may look almost identical to what we were doing while deeply connected with God. The difference is the source. We have moved from God, what are You giving me here? back toward I know how to do this.
When Did We Start Taking Control Back? Often it happens after genuine growth has made us stronger. We received from God, walked in obedience, and saw good fruit. Then the very strength He developed in us began to feel like something we could operate on independently. The progress was real. What changed was our dependence.
Don’t Let the Fruit Replace the Connection
Jesus gave us a simple picture: “He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5, NKJV).
Fruit is evidence of connection. It was never meant to become a substitute for it.
This is where self-congratulation becomes spiritually dangerous. When things are going badly, we may condemn ourselves. When things are going well, we can begin giving ourselves the credit. Both keep our attention on self. Gratitude moves us in another direction: God, this is real growth. Thank You for what You have done in me. Help me stay connected to You as I keep walking it out.
We do not need to become suspicious of progress or afraid of growing confident. Maturity should make us more capable, and heart change should produce better choices. Heart change comes through consistent heart choice. The question is whether those choices continue to flow from receiving God’s life or whether we have started living on yesterday’s supply.
Sometimes that shift is subtle. We stop asking. We stop listening. We stop asking, “Where is my spirit right now?” because the outward results still look good. We begin managing the fruit instead of receiving the life that produces it.
When we notice that happening, the answer is not self-condemnation. We do not need to decide that all our progress was fake or that we have ruined everything. We simply return to connection: God, I see where I started taking this back. Thank You for the growth You have produced. I do not want to turn Your gift into another place of independence. I need Your life here today just as much as I did when I first began.
A receiving lifestyle is not only for crisis. It becomes our new normal when we learn to stay connected while we are weak and while we are strong, when things are falling apart and when things are going well.
Reflection Question
Where have you seen real growth in your life lately? Has that progress drawn you into deeper gratitude and connection with God, or have you quietly started depending on your own ability to keep it going?
Prayer
Father, thank You for every place where You have brought real growth, strength, and good fruit into my life. Help me recognize when gratitude is beginning to turn into self-congratulation or when confidence is becoming independence from You. Teach me to remain connected to Your presence instead of trying to reproduce yesterday’s fruit through today’s effort. Keep me listening, receiving, and making heart choices that agree with You. Let the progress You have given me deepen my dependence rather than replace it. In Jesus’ name, amen.
Today's Step of Obedience
Choose one area where things have been going better.
Before you move into the next decision, stop and ask:
Where is my spirit right now?Am I receiving from God, or am I working from what I already know?Have I been thanking God for this growth, or quietly taking credit for it?
Then spend a few quiet minutes reconnecting with God before you act. Receive what He is giving you today, and make the next heart choice from that place.
