Heart Change Insight

There is always something else we could do. Another person to call. Another need to meet. Another message to answer before we stop for the day. When those things matter to us, it can feel wrong to step back. We may even tell ourselves that staying busy is what faithfulness looks like.

Jesus gives us a different picture. A branch bears fruit because it remains connected to the vine. It does not strain to manufacture grapes. It receives life, and fruit grows from that connection.

That sounds simple until we have a full schedule and someone needs an answer right now.

Are you working for God?

Suppose a friend tells you about a problem. You care about them, and you can already think of three things they should do. You begin offering advice before they have finished talking. Later, you realize that what they needed first was someone to hear what had happened.

Your desire to help was real. The question is whether you made room to listen to God and to the person in front of you.

We can approach ministry, family, and work this way. We see a need and move straight into action. Sometimes we are doing exactly what is needed. Other times, we are moving so quickly that we have left the most important relationship out of the conversation.

In Releasing God’s Life Through the Hearts of Men, the invitation is to embrace the Spirit’s work in every part of life. We don't have to wait for a special setting before we can walk with God. We can bring Him into a meeting, a difficult phone call, or a task we have done a hundred times.

Stay connected as you act

Abiding does not mean sitting still all day. The branch in Jesus’ picture is alive and productive. Its fruit comes from the life flowing through it.

We still make calls, keep commitments, and help people. We can also pause before we act and ask, Lord, what are You doing here? What is mine to do? Sometimes we will sense that we need to speak. Sometimes we will recognize that we need to listen longer, ask for help, or let another person take responsibility for their own choice.

That pause may feel uncomfortable, especially when we are used to being the one who handles things. We may worry that if we do not act immediately, nothing will happen. Yet our hurry cannot produce the kind of life Jesus is describing. He asks us to remain in Him as we go.

We can learn how to slow down, wait on God, and let our work come under His direction. That may take only a quiet moment. We acknowledge our desire to take over, remember that He is present, and become willing to follow where He leads. Then we take the step in front of us.

Notice what's growing

Jesus says that the one who abides in Him bears much fruit (John 15:5). That fruit may appear differently than we expected. A conversation may end without a solution, but we listened with care and told the truth. A project may still require hard work, but we are no longer carrying it as though everything depends on us. Someone we hoped to help may make their own decision, and we can keep loving them without trying to control the outcome.

We need to receive life before we try to give it. That is a practice we return to throughout the day. When we find ourselves pushing, proving, or taking on more than God has asked of us, we can stop and reconnect. We have not ruined the day by getting ahead of Him.

Think about what is waiting for you today. There may be work you need to do, and there may be someone who needs your attention. You can bring both to Jesus. Ask Him to help you remain with Him while you act. The work matters, but the life flowing through it matters too.

Reflection Question

Where am I striving to produce an outcome when God is inviting me to remain connected to Him and follow His lead?

Prayer

Father, thank You that I do not have to produce life on my own. Show me where I have been hurrying ahead or carrying more than You have asked me to carry. Help me stay connected to Jesus in the middle of my work and relationships. Give me wisdom to listen, act, and wait at the right times. Let the fruit of my life grow from receiving Your life. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Today's Step of Obedience

Before one task or conversation today, pause and ask, Lord, what is mine to do here? Take the next step you recognize, then leave the outcome in His hands. Notice whether that changes the way you carry the task.
