Daily Devotional: Making Room

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

Life Sayings:

  • God comes to those who make room for Him.

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me.” —Revelation 3:20

I have often found that the biggest obstacle to intimacy with God is not God’s distance from me—it’s the clutter within me. God is ready and waiting. His presence is not far off. Revelation 3:20 gives us a glimpse of His heart. He is already at the door. He is already knocking. He longs for communion, to sit down with us and share life. The problem is not His absence, it’s our lack of space.

Most people don't realize just how much self gets in the way. Ego, self-protection, and the desire to control leave no room for a Lord. The idea of surrender feels like loss. We want relief, not repentance. We want comfort, not conviction. Yet true communion begins with change, and change begins with a willingness to let go.

Conviction is uncomfortable. It exposes the parts of us that we prefer to hide. But God doesn’t shine His light to shame us. He shines it to heal us. Still, we resist. Change feels foreign, even wrong, because what is familiar feels right, even when it’s destructive.

Making room starts with a simple decision: to open the door. It’s not passive. It’s not emotionalism. It’s an act of the will to allow God to show us what must go. Jesus says, “As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent” (Revelation 3:19). Repentance is the doorway to fellowship.

The reality is, most of us come to God looking for a fix, not a King. We want a divine vending machine, not a throne. But He will not feed our selfishness. He is not absent—He is waiting. Waiting for an invitation that includes surrender. Waiting for a heart that makes room.

Reflection Question

What areas of my life have I filled with self that may be crowding out God's presence?

Prayer

Father, I admit that I have often come to You on my terms. I’ve asked for things while guarding my heart from change. Today, I want to open the door to You fully. Shine Your light on anything in me that is crowding You out. Help me make room for Your presence and surrender what needs to go. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Today’s Step of Obedience

Take 10 minutes of silence today. Ask the Lord, “What am I holding onto that You want to remove?” Write down whatever comes to mind. Be willing to release it to Him.
