Heart Change Insight

Sometimes we surprise ourselves by how quickly we can go from "I’ve got this" to "I don’t want anything to do with this."

For a while, we are pressing. We are getting things done. We are taking responsibility. We may even be the person everyone else depends on.

Then we hit a wall.

The phone rings and we don't want to answer it. One more request feels like too much. The thing we were pushing so hard to accomplish suddenly feels pointless. We pull back and wonder what happened to us.

Those two versions of us can look like opposites.

They may not be.

Why Do I Press Until I Want to Quit?

In Releasing God’s Life Through the Hearts of Men, I describe a life cycle that often moves from good flesh into burnout. Good flesh says, I can do this. I can make it work. We press with our own strength until that strength runs out.

Then the response can flip.

Instead of pressing harder, we withdraw.

That is one reason burnout can be confusing. We may think, Yesterday I cared too much. Today I barely care at all. What is wrong with me?

These two responses can be the flip side of the same coin. One is active. One is passive. The outward behavior changes, but the heart flow underneath it may still be the same. Active good flesh and passive flesh are different expressions of the same underlying spiritual flow.

A person who cares deeply about accomplishing something may press and control while there is enough energy to keep going. When the energy is gone, that same pressure may show up as resentment, withdrawal, or Why should I bother?

The desire did not necessarily disappear.

The way we are expressing it changed.

That helps explain why simply resting long enough to recover our energy may not change the pattern. If we rest only so we can get enough strength to start pressing again, we may eventually end up in the same place.

The answer is not to shame ourselves for being tired.

It is to notice the cycle.

Where do I press? Where do I withdraw? What seems to be driving both?

Sometimes the passive response tells us something important about the active one. What we called responsibility may have brought pressure or anxiety. What we called caring may have included control. What looked like strength may have depended more heavily on our own resources than we realized.

Why do I press until I want to quit? Sometimes the question becomes clearer when we stop treating the pressing and the quitting as two separate problems.

Recognizing that is not failure.

It gives us a chance to stop moving back and forth between two forms of the same pattern.

Our own effort cannot carry us into godliness. The turning point comes when we recognize the pattern, take responsibility for what is happening in our heart, and become willing to receive from God what we cannot produce ourselves. That is the movement from good flesh and burnout toward humility and intimacy with Him.

We do not have to wait until we crash to pay attention. We can learn to notice the pattern sooner, repent and recieve new guidance, direction, and strength.

Reflection Question

Where do you recognize this swing in your own life? When you move from pressing hard to pulling back, what might those two reactions have in common underneath?

Prayer

Father, help me see the patterns I have learned to treat as separate when they may be coming from the same place in my heart. Show me where I press in my own strength and where I withdraw when that strength runs out. Give me humility to recognize what is happening without condemning myself or blaming others. Teach me to receive Your strength instead of simply gathering enough energy to begin the same cycle again. Lead me into a life that is connected to You rather than driven by my own effort. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Today's Step of Obedience

Think of one area where you regularly move between pressing and pulling back.

Write down both responses:

When I am pressing, I tend to...

When I pull back, I tend to...

Then ask:

What am I trying to accomplish, protect, prove, or control in both places?

Bring that one underlying issue to God instead of trying to fix only the outward behavior.
