Daily Devotional: Faith that Works

By David A. Case

Overcoming Trauma: Redeeming Pain

“For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” - James 2:26 (NKJV)

Some people try to portray the faith lifestyle as if it requires no human effort. Scripture refuses that idea. James 2 is direct: faith without works is dead. That does not mean works earn salvation. It means real faith produces response. Faith moves. Faith obeys. Faith does something because it trusts Someone.

James describes the difference with a blunt comparison: even demons believe and tremble. They have mental agreement. They have awareness. They do not have surrender. That is why a person can say all the right words and still remain unchanged. Belief alone, if it never becomes obedience, is not living faith.

Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. Yet that faith was expressed through action. Rahab believed, and her faith showed up in what she did. Their works did not purchase God’s favor. Their works revealed that their hearts were truly turned toward Him.

This is important for becoming blessable because blessing is not random. God’s blessing flows in a context of relationship. Relationship requires response. A receiving lifestyle is not passive, and neither is faith. Receiving requires waiting and listening. Faith requires obeying what was heard.

There is also a warning here. Some people can imitate responses that look spiritual while still not connecting with God. They can perform. They can impress. They can even fool many for a while. God is never fooled. Over time, people are not fooled either. Serving God in one’s own strength eventually reveals itself. It becomes harsh, hurried, self-protective, and unstable. The fruit tells the story.

So what is the difference between faith-works and self-works? The difference is dependence. Faith-works are the responses of a person who knows he needs God every step of the way. Self-works are the responses of a person who believes he can manage without God, even if he uses religious language.

Becoming blessable means learning to live in that dependent place. It means I recognize that if I do not continually receive what I need from God, I will fail. It also means I recognize that if I get lazy and passive, I will fail. Both errors are real. God does not consistently bless those who do not seek Him. God is kind to those who are far from Him, drawing them by mercy. Yet consistent blessing is tied to a life that is turned toward Him, dependent on Him, and obedient to Him.

Faith is not an excuse to sit still. Faith is a doorway into a life where God’s grace flows, and my response keeps me in the flow. Today I ask for living faith, the kind that listens, receives, and obeys.

Reflection Question

Where have I had mental agreement with God while delaying obedience to God?

Prayer

Father, give me living faith. Deliver me from empty belief that never becomes obedience. Teach me to receive Your grace and respond to You with works that flow from dependence, not self-reliance. In Jesus’ name, amen.
